1080p?

I am pretty happy with my Panasonic HPX370. It makes amazing pictures, but I was wondering if there is a 1080p mode? I looked at all the recording signals in the camera setup menu, and all I saw were 1080 50/60i variations and 720p variations. But, no 1080p.

So there is no 1080p mode?
 
Actually, this camera has every standard shooting mode under the sun, what you're looking at is just the "top menu" so to speak. System mode has a sub-section called "rec format" that lets you switch between progressive and interlaced modes, as well as different codecs (AVC-I 100, AVC-I 50 and DVCPRO HD)
So when you select 1080p 60i for example, going to rec mode you get the the option of shooting either 60i, 30p or 24p with variants for each of the mentioned codecs.
 
It can be confusing but a lot of camera's record a progressive signal over an interlaced one so you also get it being described as 1080i 25np or 24np/30np rather than 1080p.

To go into more detail about this, when progressive capture first came into play, tape recorders only worked with 60i or 50i signals, so the solution was to split each progressive frame and recombine them on playback (this is called "wrapping"). From what I think, the 370 is set up this way for legacy compatibility, but otherwise this camera captures most progressive footage natively.

The difference between native and wrapped footage is that wrapping will always use a 60i or 50i signal to store the format you're recording, which means that regardless of the frame rate, the amount of data written to the media is the same. With native recording, only the frames captured are stored, so 24p will use less space than 25p, and in turn 30p.

I agree with all that you have said. Yes,for AVCIntra is the 1080i,25pn.The real good thing is that we are talking of native progressive,and not a pull down such as the DVCPROHD codec does.
Gary have you seen that the 3xx has been discontinued?

I need to jump in on this one. There is no 1080P/60, You get 1080P-30pn-or 24pn. I know its a different chipset but when I shot 1080i on my HVX200, after ingestion into system the footage was progressive. in the 370 my footage is interlaced. PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG!.... I would love to shoot 1080P60 on this cam.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think anyone is saying there's a 1080P/60. What *has* been said is that in the 1080P settings you get the choice of 60i, 30p, 25p or 24p.

There is no 1080/60p. There is pure progressive 1080 in 24p, 25p, and 30p, plus variable frame rates.

In AVC-Intra, it's recorded as direct progressive, no interlacing at all.

In DVCPRO-HD, 24p is recorded using 2:3 pulldown, so you will see interlacing on some frames if your NLE doesn't appropriately strip out the pulldown. If your NLE does successfully strip out the pulldown, you'll have true progressive 24p.
 
Hmmm I just saw that the HPX 3xx has been discontinued too and that means a new camera for next year, and it just so happens that we have the olympics here in the UK so no doubt as panasonic are a main sponsor I will be seeing it first hand next year as I am already booked to do the whole event as a comms supervisor and may also be covering the torch as it comes through our region!

I've seen the HPX250 online presentation and Panasonic said that they will record next Olympic Games in 3D! That would be a real innovation!
I hope that a new shoulder cam such as the 300 will be released with new AVCUltra codec soon and i hope that Panny will do a rebate for the old 300 users! I really hope that!
 
I still think that next will be a sub £10k 2/3" camera with AVC Intra 100, even if it is cmos it will fill in the gap as the HPX600 ser?

I've had my HPX301 for over two and a half years now and it is still a great camera that is serving my broadcast and corporate needs very well.

I think the olympics 3D side will be using the new camera that is derived from the 370 ser, we shall see and as there is a new studio/OB camera that is very much like the sony 1500 I suspect we will see lots of those as well.
