1080p?

So I select PH 1080p/25p in my camera settings.

I open premiere cs5 and select AVCHD > 1080p 25 timeline

when I drag the footage over it is red?

However if I use a 1080i timeline its yellow and works fine.

Im obviously stupid, but can soe1 tell me what ive done wrong here? Does this camera not shoot 1080p?!?

Well I for one am stumped.... Unfortunately I have never shot with the 25p mode because I am using NTSC standards. Does it do the same thing if you shoot in 1080p 30?

I just threw some of my 1080 24p footage into a 1080 24p AVCHD timeline and I don't even get a yellow bar...though I know I have seen the yellow bar before. So it should work fine. Are you in the UK?

As you know mate ive been looking into buying a dslr...which would mean that I would have to shoot on the hmc in 1080p 25 frames (I used to shoot just in 720p) to accomodate it.

So I got a friend to throw me over some footage off his 550d just to run a quick test. This was the first time Id used 1080.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is PH 1080 25 frames not what im after? If it isnt, I dont see what is.

The only 1080 modes I have are PH 1080/50i and PH 1080/25p......... Am I missing some kinda of camera update?

I am in the UK yes mate. I unfortunately get a RED bar.

I should note the 550d footage worked absolutley fine. The problem is getting my camera to record in 1080p...

Sorry, I forgot about the PAL specs. For NTSC we have 24p, 30p, 60p and 60i. So your 720p 25 footage works fine on a 720p 25 AVCHD timeline? If so, that is very strange. There might be some issue with CS5 for 1080 25p PAL footage. Maybe Barry will happen upon this and shed some better light. There are also a number of UK folks here in the forums, so you'll probably get some answer.

And, no this isn't a camera update issue. As far as I understand AVCHD can't do 1080/50p so your only options for progressive footage are 1080/25p, 720/50p, and 720/25p.

1.Yes my 720p 25 footage works fine on a 720p AVCHD timeline.

2. So PH 1080 25p should be ok on an AVCHD 1080 25p timeline right? - This sounds stupid, I know...

3. So why on earth when I select PH1080 25p do I get a yellow bar on the 50i timeline? and red on the 25p timeline. I am very confused.

Answers to your questions:

2. As far as I can see in my slightly limited knowledge of PAL, yes.

3. I don't know why it won't work on the 25p timeline, but given that is does work on the 50i timeline, it sounds like either the camera or Premiere is interpolating the footage as 50i. In a 50i clip there are 50 images, but each image is only half of the lines of the image because it is interlaced. So even though there are 50 images, there are only really 25 full and complete images of what you are shooting. 25p is similar...It is taking 50 images also, but since it is progressive each image is the entire frame and it is (I believe) duplicated. So it sounds like Premiere is looking at those 50 images from your 25p clip and thinking they are interlaced images (only every other line of the frame). The question is, why???

Here is something to try...I kinda doubt it will work, but it is worth a shot. In premiere open up your 1080/25p timeline and put the clip you are using in your Project assets. Then right click on the clip and click on "Interpret Footage". Then in each of the areas change the frame rate (even if it is correct) to the 25p frame rate (make sure the frame rate has the proper numbers after the decimal, I have no idea it PAL acts this way, but my 24p is really 23.976), then change the pixel aspect ratio to the proper ratio (I am guessing 1.0) and then finally and most importantly change the Field Order to "No frames (Progressive Scan)". Even if it already said, No fields, click on the "Conform to drop down and select No Frames. Now click ok and then drag that clip into your timeline and see what happens.

FYI, these are the instructions I use for CS4 since I haven't upgraded yet. So they may be different. Also, when you try this, if your clip doesn't say "No Frames" that will tell you a lot about how it is interpretting your footage.

Hehe right...Im not sure what this means...

I did exactly what you said.....and we have YELLOW. Ok you fixed it, now tell me why and how :D

LOL...well it seems as though between the PAL metadata attached to your clips from your HMC151 and the metadata read by CS5 there is a miscommunication. Premiere is reading those 50 frames as interlaced images rather than progressive images. You basically went in and told Premiere to interpret the footage as though the images are progressive. Normally if you do this and change the properties of a clip, you then have to render. Since you don't that means your file was correct to begin with and Premiere was just interpreting it incorrectly until you told it the proper settings.

When you click on "Interpret Footage" and the box came up, what did it say next to Field Order? Make sure you check this on a different clip that you didn't already interpret.

It says Field order : use upper field first.

although on the 550 footage it says, 'No fields (use progressive)

hmmm.

There's your problem. Premiere is definitely thinking that this is interlaced. It seems to be a Premiere CS5 support issue. They need to look into the file data that the HMC creates and make sure they add it to their software so it interprets it correctly. I would recommend you send them an email or go on the adobe forums and post your story and they will hopefully fix it on the next update. I have friends at Adobe as well (I live in San Jose where they are headquartered) so I'll try to remember to mention it to the right people as well, but it is better coming from a user in the UK. Make sure you be specific in mentioning your camera model and that the 720/25p timeline works just fine, but that Adobe is interpreting your 1080/25p footage as 50i.

Until they fix it, you are going to need to do what I told you earlier each time. Sorry. :-(

Im essentially trying to get the 550d into my hmc setup in a way that works.

Now im fairly happy shooting in 720, as I find the modes useful for over cranking and slow mo work. I have 2 more questions (im sorry!)

1. What would happen if I shot on the 550d at 1080 25p, and put it into a premiere 720p 25 frame avchd timeline?

2. If I shoot at 1080 25p on the hmc, what mode should I use to shoot slomo and overcranking etc?

Cheers

No problem...that is what the forum is for, and if you couldn't already tell today is a slow day for me ;-)

1. So in this scenario, It will go in just fine, but the size of the frame will be much larger than what you actually see in your program window. At that point you will need to either frame it the way you want if you are just wanting a portion of the screen by using the Position settings under "Motion" in the Video effects window. Or if you want the full frame you will need to shrink the "scale" in those same settings to a smaller percentage. I can't remember what the exact number is but you can play with it to figure it out. I do believe, no matter what you will have the red line and there will be rendering to do.

2. LOL, well that is the issue we all deal with. You can't really overcrank in the 1080 frame size on the HMC151. Like I said, both the 50i and 25p are 50 images, but the 25p is just duplicating each frame (I am pretty sure anyway) to make 50 and the 50i each image is only half of frame (every other line). What you need to properly overcrank is 50p because then you have 50 complete and unique images per second, so when you throw it into a 25p timeline, it will play slower because it is now cramming those 50 images into 25. That was probably a terrible way to explain it so I hope it made sense.

No thanks alot man you've been a great help.

So to this end, Im going to stick with shooting in 720p. I do too much overcranking and slow mo to really justify shooting in 1080 on this cam - just too much of a headache for me.

I have now set prem to automatically scale down to frame size. I ran a small test with the 550d 1080 25p footage I had. Exported at 720p. Compared versus an exported 1080p version.

Looks good enough to me! I think we have it sorted :D

and FYI... with the 550 footage scaled down to 720 on the timeline, it gives a yellow bar. I think as long as the frame rate is the same, you are good to go :)

Many thanks matey!
