1080p VS 1080i... is 1080p60p ever coming?

1.) So from reading up, it is my understanding that currently, in the US, the only broadcasted signal is 1080i... and while the HVX can shoot a progressive frame in 1080i mode, it works much like 30p does in 480i mode - it gets pulldown applied as the signal is an over 60 signal, and will end up displaying as interlaced. Is this all correct?

2.) So my question is - is 1080p on its way to becoming a broadcast format? Currently there is 720p with 60p frames... will there someday be 1080p with 60p frames, and 30p frames (displayed natively), etc.? If so, how far away is this?

3.) And, if this is coming, if I shoot in 1080i30p in the HVX200, and remove the pulldown in post to restore it to its true "30p frames"... if I hang on to this footage as such, when a true 1080p signal becomes in use, will this footage be true "full HD" 1080p?

4.) So on TV sets that say "true 1080p HD" - what are they referring to? Are they capable of displaying 1080p with 30p or 60p true progressive images, ahead of the broadcast standards?? Or what?

Please/thank you in helping me wrap my head around all this...!!!

1. Correct

2. 1080@60p is likely to become a standard because today's HDTVs can handle it and it can get great quality from 60p, 30p, 24p, and even 60i broadcasts. The new HDMI interface is designed to carry a 1080@60p signal.

3. It won't be "full HD" because DVCProHD @ 1080i is actually 1280x1080i and the HVX is not a very good 1080i camera anyway. But if it could record 1920x1080 @ 30p then played back on a 1080@30p or better screen, it would be "full HD". (HPX3000)

4. All that means is it can display a 1080p frame, but it could be 24p only.

Oh boy, are we now back to debating whether or not DVCProHD is "full HD"?

And regarding 1080p vs. 1080i, the 1080 24p or 30p footage captured by the HVX in DVCProHD IS 1080p, just laid out over a 1080i stream (this has been discussed *very* extensively in a multitude of threads on this site).

Absolutely.
Funny how we never wind up discussing whether or not the 24P from the DVX is really progressive.
:)
The two work exactly the same way.
