I remembering reading that the benefits of 720p is better slow motion. But why can't you film in 1080p 60i and slow mo it? How is that different from 720p 60p and slow mo? Just a question cause i didn't know why 720p would be better.

1920x540 @ 60fps or 1280x720 @ 60fps? Decide which one is better for you. Using progressive video to start with is simpler because you need to jump through deinterlacing hoops.

There is no such thing as 1080p/60i It's either p for progressive, or i for interlaced. At 60i you're getting 30 frames a second. At 60p you're getting 60 frames a second. More frames = looks better when slowed down.

I had nearly the same question because I used to use 60i on the DVX at 1/120th shutter then slow mo to 40% and it looked great. What I'm finding is that using 60i on the HMC, it looks better on big screen HD TVs, looks fine rendered down to DVD, but doesn't allow for clean slow mo. 720-60p displays frame by frame on both a 30p or 60i timeline set at 50%, and a 24p timeline set to 40%. Speaking from Vegas.

Well, more precisely, in 60i you get 60 half frames. So it's sort of like recording at 60p at half the resolution. It seems to me you should get smoother slow motion (though fuzzier) with deinterlacing of 60i footage than just slowing down 30p footage - right? At least, I thought each half frame was captured separately. Maybe I'm wrong.

Obviously though, 60P is the best option for frame accurate slow motion.

60i, with each field converted to its own frame, will give you smoother slow motion at the expense of being half-resolution. 30p slowed down to 60p will give you clunkier motion, at full resolution. 720/60p is the best mode to use for slow motion.
