1080p or 720p?

I am shooting for a short that is going to be shown on a 4:3 standard deff projector. We have to export so that it goes 4:3 onto mini dv tape or DVD. Not sure what format to shoot and how to down rez after the shoot is over. We want to use it for other stuff too which is why were deffinitly doing it in HD.

I shoot most of my stuff in 1080 24pA unless I need over or under-cranking, which is 720p. I do this because 1080p has more res, about 15-20% more, and less compression than 720p. It does eat up a lot more storage space but it is worth it to me.

So shoot in 1080 24pA if yo can and then down convert for sd.

I assume you're shooting on the HVX, in which case the storage advantage of shooting 720pN far outweighs the slight increase in resolution of 1080pA.

If you shoot in HD, it's definitely going to be 16:9. A typical NLE will automatically letterbox your 16:9 video when you use it in a 4:3 project.

hvx does not support variable frame rates in 1080 mode, only in 720p film cam.

and how to downres

edit your film in 1080 or 720.

then create another sequence, but make the sequence 4x3 ntsc dv(under sequence> settings> hit the "load sequence preset.." button and choose dv ntsc 48k).

then drag your HD sequence into that new 4x3 ntsc dv sequence, and when the window pops up asking if you want it to match hit no.

render out to tape, quicktime, or dvd.
