1. This won't be competition to any other D-SLR on the market in terms of a video capable D-SLR (due to price, of course only as long as Canon comes out with a 1Ds Mark 4)
2. At what crazy price will it be this time? (Reminding you guys at D3x price)
3. Isn't a D700x upgrade due very soon? (Reminding how the D700 was so much cheaper and just as good as the D3)

I agree, the D3 is around $5000, that would mean that if this rumor is true then this camera would be shooting higher then the 5D. This would be shooting for competition against RED.

Or the HD video on the D3s could be an after thought and slapped on just for the sake of it.

The D700x would be a much more likely candidate for Nikon to use to fight against canon in the VDSLR wars.

But honestly who the hell knows...

Actually you would have to look at the price of the D3x which is like 9000$ or something. I'm quite sure the D3s won't be cheaper than it's predecessor.
I'm pretty sure though that the video functionality is just an added bonus and it's not meant to be competition to Red.
I agree, the D700x will be the bad ass competition for D-SLRs with video function. I'm still waiting, not getting into the 7D boat early. Would rather use the full frame D700x.

I had the D700 and it was/is a wonderful camera. I might get on board with it's successor if they get the video mode right and the price of the D700 was around same as the 5D Mark 2.

I'm not convinced Nikon places our level of importance of manual control on D.Movie. I've been told that it's no big deal to implement (less difficult than all the automatics). Wouldn't they have done manual on the d300s if they felt the need?

I'm with mhood on this one. We've left the affordable bracket compared to GH1/D90 D300 all these guys when talking bout the D3. It's thousands of dollars, I know I'll have to spend over 5, under ten to get it working. 5-10 isn't the most affordable for a person looking at under a 2500 ceiling. Different playing field, not talkin bout studios, talking bout indy folk, and at that price level, with video still an added feature, I doubt much attention is being paid to video.

Shot D3 before, its a CRAZY stills cam. I think that's what Nikon are primarily after, manual would've been on the D300s.

For the D3's price range, and for me, someone interested in video over stills, I'd spend that money on an ikonoskop dii eyes closed, and wait for it till it comes out.

The price ceiling is what makes a vdslr a good purchase against a dedicated video capture device. They cost less, and give you what you can't get on a camcorder, for a few thousand less.

If that few thousand wasn't an issue, then it's camcorder time, and in my opinion (personal) Ikonoskop is it.

Cheers all

One interesting thing (rumored, but credible) about the D3 is 14 frames/second in burst mode - apparently the main tech upgrade was a second image processing chip which makes this more practical (the existing D3 does 9, IIRC). It strikes me that the Canon 5d did 4fps, which the newly-released 7d doubled, again by adding an extra chip.

14 is impressive (though I shudder to think what this does to the shutter mechanism if it doesn't employ live view). It's getting awfully close to 24, like I'd guess we'll hit that speed within 2 years. At that point the only remaining question is how fast you dump the images out to external storage...I'm guessing we'll see a DSLR with a high-bandwidth external connection before very long.

Good points. Although that's what RED has been working on.(Minus the TTL)

Basically Nikon now needs a sub $2K camera with manual controls, and they could do it with a firmware update...

Sign below if you haven't...

I find it hard to believe they would do that,,,but if it was 720P no jello, no rolling shutter, no overheating it would be good. But I'm not going to have $7 or $8 grand for a camera. This thing is for pro-photographers anyway. I was hoping for a D700s release too.

The latest rumors on the Nikon D3s specs:

Better ISO-performance (ISO 200-12800 probably)
New 1.2 crop mode
Bigger buffer
Motion-Jpeg 720p (no 1080p!)
Improved AF-ON button
Improved multi-dial
No 14 fps, I repeat no 14 fps
There is also a chance that only the Nikon D3s will be released – no new lenses. This one is still very hard for me to believe, but those are the latest rumors folks.

Since the HDSLR's on the market today still have their problems I've been holding out for something better. I'm not sure a $5000+ camera that only does M-JPEG 720p is going to cut it.

Surely this can't be correct, can it?

At the outset of this whole HDSLR thing I was convinced that Nikon would be the company who would take it and run since they had no video division to compete with. If those specs are true then for this year at least they seemed to have focused only on building a superb stills camera and haven't seen the potential in the other side of the market. Oh well.

I love to have one just to take pictures!!! I think the next several months should bring out more from Nikon. Now that Canon has unloaded it is their turn again!
