Ok I just loaded the "C" settings for the first time. Never used the NEW AVCHD . I put the AVCHD files through Cineform and
compared them to the same shots done in MJPEG 1080P 70+ Mbits mode.

Mjpeg 1080 from these tests look to be an upscale from 720. So the 720 High bit rate Mjpeg at 70 to 80 mbits is
extremely good from a compression point of view. That is essentially twice the quality then the 1080 Mjpeg upscale
is getting in Bits per pixel. Makes sense since the best looking Mjpegs were the 702P at 70Mbits I shot.
This is a very gorgeous mode and a sweet spot for 720P.

So 720P 4:2:2 at 70+ mbits is how MJpeg should be approached, unless something changes. Since the
1080P MJPEG is robbing the 720P of twice the Mbits to compress no extra resolution. Better to throw that
good compression at the 720P frame.

The AVCHD performed quite well-I was very surprised. If this could get up to 70Mbits+ AVCHD- WOW!

I had only one write error. It happened to be the same setup as the MJPeg that had a write error too, however
the two have way different Mbit rates. This is very interesting and should be noted in figuring out maybe
why the write errors are happening.

I also noticed that the 1080P MJPEG has very little jello compared to 1080P AVCHD- that was another
clue that the 1080P MJPEG is an upscale since it performed like the 720P mode on the GH1 with respects
to having very little jello/skew from the sesnor.

I'm going out to shoot some more MJPEG 70Mbit vs AVCHD at night. I have had very good response
with Mjpeg at night. Curious if AVCHD will do well there as it did here under good lighting.

LIGHTS OUT!!!! I'm not sure if I like the blond or the brunette better? I'm sooooo sorry for the comparison, but I just DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY???? The 720P is obviously softer, but that NOT A BAD THING. Especially if you're not into the SUPER SHARP look. I like that too....but HOW COOL IS IT TO HAVE A CHOICE? IN THE SAME CAMERA????!!!

Thanks a MILLION Pappas!

That's what I've been saying. 1080p MJPG, I don't really understand the point, because it's an upscale vs. the AVCHD, which is just super-crisp super-sharp clean goodness.

720p MJPG at 4:2:2? Yes, that's sweet! But I haven't been impressed with the 1-second bursts of 1080p MJPG I was shooting before; it just seemed not as detailed, and furthermore contaminated with the chroma aliasing like the Canons have. The 720p MJPG is apparently just as sharp, but without the chroma aliasing, and if you can juice it up to 4:2:2 with some of the additional bandwidth, that makes it very, very cool.

Now that you've taken the dive into the AVCHD end of the pool, it'll be very very interesting to hear your reports. If you hadn't tried it before, I think you're in for some serious amazement. Keep shooting and let us know what you think!

Yeah Barry, the 720P at 4:2:2 is a fantastic option. The first stuff i shot was all 720P, however the 1080P's were lacking that 720P goodness. Of course after I loaded the AVCHD earlier- Yeah now were talking true 1080P compared to the upscale MJPEG.

The choice of choosing between a good hi bit rate AVCHD 1080P, and then a high bit rate 720P at 4:2:2 color space in the same camera is an awesome thing...

I'm not kidding....I'm completely FREAKING OUT! :) I SWEAR....this is NOT a comparison, but I'm A LOT LESS worried about the Scarlet release date. Not that I will or will not get one. It's just so FREAKING CRAZY that I bought THIS camera for less than 700.00!!! ARE YOU KIDDING???? Holy freaking.....(I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight?)

:) Thanks again! Tester13, Vitaliy...you rock! Thank you all!! Christmas came early!!!

There is no other camera even remotely close in price that can compare to the new AVCHD results.

Did you change the GOP with the AVCHD setting? Can you post your exact settings for the AVCHD? thanks.

Thats some great comparisons Pappa...I have to say though when i used the MJpeg 720p settings you recommend It just seem to "look" nowhere as good as the 1440? (seemed to have less detail...very moir-like effect with heavy detail vertical*horizontal lines etc) I use Fd lenses but with my tests I use the 20mm f1.7 panny (as its very sharp)
I will change over to 720p again and do some more tests.

1440 mode is very nice. I have shots that say so. AVCHD 1080P - Mjpeg 1080P and 720P all have their spot. This camera is kinda like a transformer that is going into the shape of a Swiss army knife. It's all gravy, coming from this camera....

I know, it's becoming it's own class of camera.....

That AVCHD looks really damn good. Exciting stuff. Thanks for posting.

I didn't expect it myself; and it's amazing. The way things are going with development, it will probably get even better...

Didn't touch the GOP- I used the "C "settings

Video bitrate adjustment simplified : 50.000.000
Overall bitrate adjustment : 52.000.000
Limiting bitrate adjustment : 60.000.000

Is there any 4:2:2 stuff at 720P available for download? I haven't seen anything shot at that setting.

Hey Isaac,

I hoping to do that soon. I need to make sure the settings will work with 4:2:2 and not spike the codec. 720P without 4:2:2, with all the Mbits thrown at it is gorgeous and smooth as it is.. Will be interesting.

I found this one: http://vimeo.com/12599793
It's from a GF1 though but that shouldn't matter. The download is an original MJPEG. Vimeo seems to just rename the .mov to .mp4. PappasArts values result in a 97% quality factor! If I only could understand what those four setting exactly do.

720p MJPEG
Q: 384, 330, 300, 276
T: 24, 24, 24, 24

Colorsampling 422

It looks good. I definitely want to see more, just wish there were a 24P breakthrough coming soon. :crybaby:

And 25P, fingers crossed. But really, I'm lost for words after looking at some of the samples posted here today..holy ****! I need to start playing with the PTool asap

When i did my first 80mbit mjpeg and "C" AVCHD i was expecting mjpeg to shine but I liked the AVCHD better. Bokeh was a lot smoother and with the upped bitrate blending was more grain like which i likd rather than a smear with the old AVCHD. I think your early test really raised my expectations of mjpeg so i was looking for gold.

I am still preferring AVCHD in this test, its alot sharper and cleaner. I can see blocking in the under exposed parts of the Palm leaves in the MJPEG pic, its cleaner in AVCHD. An upscaled 720 kinda explains alot.

1080 wouldn't work for me at 80mbit. might try 50mbit 1080 setting that Andrew used. But if its 720 upscaled would it make sense to shoot 720 80mbit and then upscale it post?

Wow. Uhh, I'm going back on what I said in another thread. I prefer the AVCHD at 1080p for now. Thanks for posting the comparison. Looking forward to seeing your night shots and wondering if my opinion will change again.

Try the new settings too Pappas-Barry

Try the new settings too Pappas-Barry

for comparison, they look better than "C" to me and as you have the fast cards you are good to go, am using sandisk ex 3 30mb/s

60,62,70.

Note, am still using pal and 50i, not tried-evaluated the 25p option, yet, I have noticed that 50i suffers less RS, so for me this is no issue but others may want to evaluate the p option too.

Have you tried fast panning with this setting? If it holds well even with fast panning, I may have to go get a good 30mb/s card. I can leave 24p unchecked if that is necessary. That is not an issue for me either.
