1080P HDTVs

Anyone got one of these new HDTVs that can do 1080P. Most you can't even input 1080P programming through it's HDMI connector. Some allow 1080P throught their PC connector though. Not that there's any 1080P programming out there anyways but wouldn't it be ideal to view HVX200 1080P footage on one of these TV's? Or would the difference not be that significant over non-1080P TVs?

Even though the HVX definately shoots 24 & 30 1080P it records it as a 60I signal. So you would most likely not see a big difference sraight from the camera. If you did have an HD card in your NLE you could possibly use that for native 1080P playback.

Has it even been established that the analog output of the HVX will provide progressive scan support or will all the outputs (composite, Y/C and component) be interlaced?

I was thinking more from the PC perspective where the progressive video could be put back together. With an HD card in the computer you should be able to output pure 1080P to a 1080P HDTV. Should look quite good.

I was under the impression that the HVX records it's 1080p stream the same way the DVX carries it's 480p stream over interlaced 60i.

There is only one or two HD TVs that has inputs for 1080p programming. I think one is the HP model and I'm not sure but I think the second one is a Westinghouse model. More sets will come out in July 2006. Yes it would be nice to see your work on a 1080P set. I was just thinking about purchasing a HDTV for the home and realize that if I can get one with a 1080p input, that would serve a dual purpose. Panasonic needs to come out with a model with 1080p inputs being that right now their Plasma is blowing everyone away.

That is correct. But it still is displayed as field-a then field-b Ect... so you are really only ever seeing 1/2 the resolution at one time. Temporally you don't see the difference as two different fields this why a pull down works at all. But you never see all the resolution at once if you do not have a progressive scan monitor. That is also why 720P is essentially the same resolution as 1080I. You can display 720 lines all at once on the same TV as an interlaced 1080 lines. Needless to say a real 1080P will be quite stunning.

That's true, and the convention used to describe it would be 1080psf/30 - psf standing for progressive, segmented field. Apparently the perceived resolution is the same as 1080p/30, in other words better than 1080i/30.

The expectation when European services start is that the majority of transmission will be 1080i/25 - though since much will be originated 1080p/25, a lot will actually be 1080psf/25. The goal is to move production at least to 1080p/50 when technology permits. See http://www.ebu.ch/en/technical/trev/trev_301-editorial.html for more details from the EBU, and note that 720p/50 transmission is likely to be permitted, if lesser used.

the second one is a Westinghouse model

I'm currently shopping for a new HDTV and checked out the Westinghouse at one of the local Best Buys and while it did claim to have 1920 x 1080 and 1080p capabilities the picture did not look anywhere near as crisp as the Panasonic Plasma tvs or even the Sony Wega HD LCD tvs. I think even the Sharp Aquos line looked better. I guess it proves why sometimes a brand name is worth the extra cash.

While i'm posting has anyone purchased any one of the new HDTVs that they absolutely love and would like to recommend to the board?

LCD, Plasma, or DLP i'm open to any suggestions.

You can spend some time here to get a feel for the current state of all things display related;

I tried the 37" Sceptre LCD 1920 by 1080 and didn't keep it. I think I'd be happy with the more punchy picture from a larger plasma...

As far as plasmas go, the most popular include Panasonic's 8th generation series of displays, particularly from their professional line, and Pioneer's 6th generation monitors.

The one to get in the Panasonic line is the 50" TH-50PHD8UK. Although it features only a 1366 x 768 resolution, it supports the following signals:

1080/60i, 1080/50i, 1080/24p, 1080/24sf, 1080/25p, 1080/30p, 720/60p, 720/50p, 480/60p, 480/60i

And even better, you can customize the display based entirely on which module you purchase including even an HD-SDMI Terminal Board, wireless connectivity for notebooks, or even a 20GB hard drive if you have the money.

I don't think you can find these features on Panasonic's consumer line of plasmas. For a full list of accessories, check out this link.

Best thing about the 8UK is it costs about $3000 - cheaper than the consumer one because it lacks speakers and an internal HD tuner (most prefer to customize these anyway)

I hear Panasonic recently announced a 65" plasma with 1920X1080 native resolution - this would be the plasma to get albeit at the cost of a car I'm sure. Or maybe the Samsung LN-R570D, a 57" LCD that also support 1920X1080. The price? More than $15,000 US and not out yet.

Otherwise, Samsung has many DLP televisions now that support 1920X1080 for $3000, but once again, whether they accept this signal from a computer input or other, you'll have to check.

If I was to buy a HDTV for movies or for viewing material, it would be the 50" Panasonic.
