F3: 1080p 50p not available ?

I was scrolling through the various frame rates on the F3 and I can not find an option to do 1080p 50p or 60p.

Do I need the paid RGB upgrade to allow those frame rates to come out of the dual SDI ports?

I know that the BMD HD Shuttle will not be able to do these frame rates at 422 out, but what are the current ext recorder options used in conjunction with the rgb upgrade to get 1080p slog 50p. I may buy my own shuttle and rent a recorder for 1080p 50 for when it's required.

Thanks

Surinder.

I believe the 60p signal is always coming out the SDI A and SDI B ports, but through your menu under Dual-Link & Gamma Select” set it to “1.5G YPbPr422 & Video".

To record 60p you need Gemini, Sony SR-W1, Cinedeck, or you can use a dual SDI PCI card in a MAC tower and haul that around. I know a few projects that did this believe it or not even though they were not locked down on a set or in a studio.

You can also record 60p to 720p internal cards and many have done 50% blow up in post to 1080p and it can be very difficult to see any difference. I've even had some of my material shot in 720p blown up to 1080p screen on theatre screen in several film festivals. It is not as bad as people think. Just an idea...

Pretty soon you'll also have the option of the AJA Quad ($3000) and the Convergent Design Odyssey ($1300 + recording codec cost) for recording 50p/60p out of the F3. They'll certainly make it more affordable to get full HD slow motion out of the F3.

Unless its changed, the only internal codec being offered on the Odyssey is AVID in MXF so this sort of limits your NLE software options unless you feel like transcoding everything. I asked about a MOV QT wrapper and Convergent Designs said they will not be doing it because someone told them not to. Strangest response I ever heard, but looks like they are sticking with AVID.

Deal breaker right there if I was really looking at this.

The Sony SR-R1 can also record 1080 50p from the Sony F3. In fact, the Sony SR-R1 can also do variable frame rates from 17-60fps with the F3.

Additionally, if a computer tether is feasible, there are a number of internal and external video cards that have dual link or 3G and can do 50p/60p recording. The computer cards are typically cheaper than standalone products.

At half the price of the next cheapest option (the AJA Quad), I think it's a limitation worth putting up with for the occasional times you need to shoot in slow-motion. Plus for anyone who already has an external recorder - you can always use your original recorder to record the .MXF files from the odyssey into the format you usually record in. Sure it's an inelegant solution, but one worth exploring for $1500 I think.

I agree as an only "60p" solution not a bad option, but CD's SSD's cost at least 3 times that of standard consumer SSD's so that has to be factored in as well. A 512GB drive could very well cost another $1000 or even more.

Tough call, but like you said for occasional 60p use, it's probably still the cheapest option going.

I just wanted to highlight the AVID codec limitation because I feel its an important one some might not have considered.

Avid users want MXFs because anything else either gets transcoded to MXF upon import. It defeats the purpose of recording DNX in camera because it takes so long to import.

There's more to the story, (AMA media too), but that's the short of it.

Yes that is great for AVID folks, but Adobe folks can't open AVID DNxHD MXF files without re-wrapping to MOV QT files...
