1080i vs 720p

This thread is fantastic...

For shooting action (I do a lot of surfing and sports), I like using 720 60p... the only 1080 option that comes close to that smooth motion is 60i. BUT if the HVX 1080i format is actually progressive, is there a way to get 60p shooting 1080?

The HVX only goes up to 30p when shooting in 1080. But you'll probably like that better than 1080i60. Try it and see.

According to Barry, the signal is processed at 60p, so maybe the limiting factor is the DVCProHD data rate.

It is -- well, that plus that there's no broadcast standard or recording standard for 1080/60p. If you were to get a Hydra modification for an HVX then it could extract 1080/60p, but there is no common broadcast protocol for that yet.

yeah, I use 30p for anything that doesn't require capturing fast motion, but the 60p rocks for that purpose... especially for web application, where I don't want interlaced video.

Just to add to the discussion. In my own tests I noticed for very complex imagery, 1080p downrezzed to 720p retained more detail than 720P native.

What I plan on doing for my next project is just that. 720pn for 90% of the shots, and wide and/or outdoor scenes 1080p downrezzed in Shake.

BTW, the software used for downrezzing/uprezzing makes ALL of the difference in the world! FCP doesn't hold a candle to Shake. I love Shake, even if effects is not one's biz, the plugins and basic functions is worth the ticket.

Hope my .02 cents is worth something :)

Great thead, very useful info.
I'm starting a nat. history doc tomorrow with a HDX900 and I'll use my HVX as a 2nd cam. Based on this thread, I will shoot 1080/24p on the HDX900 and the HVX whenever possible. However, if I need to utilize the variable frame rates in 720p on the HVX, will the resolution shift be very noticeable to the average viewer (not one of us)? Also, any thoughts on how FCP6 will upres/downres the different formats in the new open timeline setting?
