1080i or 1080p

What are the reasons for choosing 1080i over 1080p or vise-versa?
The way I see it is 1080i for broadcast TV & 1080p for internet delivery. That seems logical, however... my TV playp 1080p just fine. So if HD TV's can play 1080p wouldn't you want to shoot progressive all the time?

Depends on the aesthetic you are going for, and or the requirements of the needed footage.

Also note that shooting and delivering may end up being completely different.

For example, the majority of the work I do is television commercials, and the delivery specs I am asked for now are almost exclusively 1080i video with 48K 16bit audio.

There's a difference between acquisition and delivery.

Shoot whatever you want to get the look you want based on frame rate (and shooting progressive is just fine... recommended, in fact).

Deliver based on the required specs of the client. 1080i is typically only needed for TV, so if you're sending to a broadcast or cable network they will likely require 1080i (though some do use 720p). If your end-target is Internet distribution, then progressive is a must.

You can shoot progressive and deliver interlaced. That coversion will be the last thing you do before delivery, so edit in the same that you shoot. In other words, if you shoot 24p, edit and output in 24p. Convert it to 1080i at the very end to send it to the network.
