1080i or 1080p?

Hey,

This is a (dumb) question that's been gnawing at me for ages and there seems to be so many conflicting opinions. Anyone have a definitive answer?

I could have this completely wrong but... from what I gather, the HVX200A always captures at 1080p but then either scales it down to 720p or embeds it in a 1080i video stream (depending on whether you want 720p or 1080i).

If that's true, how can I just get at the 1080p? Not 1080i. I heard someone say (somewhere (?)) that you can remove the interlacing later on... but that sounds like it wouldn't really be accessing the original 1080p material - rather, just throwing away information instead.

But... I could be wrong :) If anyone would set me straight and explain specifically how to get at the 1080p in Final Cut Pro, you would be my hero!

Thanks kindly,

ALEX

If you shoot 1080/24pA, when you log and transfer into FCP, it knows how to recombine the frames to get a truly progressive image. It doesn't throw away anything. It's the same thing as the DVX's 24p modes, the editing program does all the work for you.

That's what I wanted to hear

Cool. That's great news.

Now... is there anything I have to do when I Log and Transfer? Or after, in the Timeline? Or do I just use the shooting format from the HVX and Log and Transfer as per normal?

I'm definitely not complaining but it sounds too easy :)

Thanks for the advice. Very much appreciated,

ALEX

If you are working in FCP and are shooting at 24fps, , do not forget to shoot your footage in pA mode. FCP does not have a DVCProHD codec for plain 1080/24p. If you shoot regular 24p, you'll be either disappointed or ticked off (or both).

What about Premiere? How do you get progressive video from 1080 in 24p or 30p mode?

Effortlessly. Just drag the footage onto a 1080/24p timeline. Premiere will know what to do to strip out the pulldown.
