1080i /60i vs 30p vs 24p

I am sure this is a personal preference but just wanted to throw this out here: What mode do most of you choose to shoot in and why? I am new to this field and I am trying different modes with my HVX200A. Just curious for some real feed back from people that do this for a living/hobbie. Thanks, JB

Hi Digital:

I shoot in 720/24pN mode with the HPX170. I use this mode most often for the simple reason that it allows the maximum record time on my P2 cards. If I had unlimited P2 cards, I would shoot everything 1080 24p. I work mostly in docs and DVD bonus material with a smattering of television and events like movie premiers and EPK.

If I was shooting sports or some other sorts of live events, I would probably shoot 720 60P because it looks interlaced like 1080i but it is still progressive. Once you shoot progressive, shooting in interlaced becomes a bit backwards as far as I am concerned. Who needs interlaced artifacting when you don't have to have it?

1080i = the live look of sports, award shows, news and soap operas
720/60p = the same live look but in a progressive package
720/30p - kind of in between 24p and 60p as far as look. Doesn't look as filmic as 24p but more filmic than 60p or 60i.
720 or 1080 24p = the most cinematic look possible with HD video.

You should shoot whichever aesthetic and format that appeals to your audience the most.

Thanx Pure Drifting that was very helpful. I shot a small sequence in 1080/24p and I wasn't real sure if I was happy with it or not. I am gonna shoot in all modes til I get used to the out put of each. I guess practice makes perfect. Thanks, JB

If you were watching it on a Plasma or LCD, they are naturally progressive and that will have an effect on incoming 1080i signals.

There is nothing inherently "wrong" with 1080 60i, it looks fine for viewing. The issues come up if you are editor or doing VFX with interlaced footage, then you curse 1080 60i. All of the masters I deliver to the studios, with the exception of a few film clip heavy pieces, are on HDCAM SR 1080 60i. But I still shoot and edit in progressive, the conversion to 60i is done at the final output.

With plasma and lcd heading toward saturation of the market, are interlace artifacts for viewing going away?
Sounds like the advantage of 720 60p for sports may evaporate.

I followed Dan´s advice and shot in 720 pN. Gave me double time on my P2 card and the Fs100.
I just got back from 2 months in India and still have to shoot in Europe now. After editing I will have to deliver interlaced. I am really curious how it looks in the end. I am told they want DVCPRO 50 or 100 and am curious how to proceed during edit. What sort of format should I use during edit? right now I have QT 720 pn.
