1080i 29.97 or 720,60p

Hi,

I am planning on shooting lots of sports games and was wondering what the better solution was.

Almost all of my work will be going straight to DVDs.

However, a few months later I will be building highlight reels out of these games, which will be uploaded to websites. The progressive footage will look very nice here.

I'm leaning more towards 60p, but I hear you can get much better DVD results with 1080i.

Your thoughts?

I use 720 60P for sports. 1080 30P or 24P for everything else. As for "much better dvd results with 1080i", where did you hear that? I would think you would have better playback with a progressive frame rate.

Hm, maybe I'm just not recalling it correctly, but I thought you may get better quality going to 480i from 1080i than 720p.

Well it sort of depends on if you want a 60 frame look on your DVD. DVD doesn't not support 60p so if you want high framerate video your only choice is 60i. It is usually easier to down convert 60i to 60i in many NLE's then it is to interlace 60 progressive frames together to make a 60i DVD. It can be done and I think the results would be great but it is not as easy. Some systems like Adobe CS4 just have no way of doing this function at all.

I'm definitely going to avoid 30p because I will be panning constantly. I know the strobbing isn't as bad as with 24p, but I figured it's not the right frame rate for action sports.

If scaling progressive is better than interlaced, then my choice is pretty simple because I'll benefit from 60p in both the shooting and later editing for the web.

Thomas, I'm a little confused about what you wrote. There may have been some typos there?

My understanding is that you can only (no Bluray) make a 24 or 29.97 DVD. So if I shoot in 60p, it will take 30 of those frames and interlace them?

But if I shoot in 60i, it always seemed to me that the less work is done in the conversion process, the better the results?

I will probably set up my camera and shoot both ways and make DVDs to see the results side by side, but I'm just interested to see what you guys thought about it.

If Barry says scaling progressive is better, I'm pretty convinced...
