1080i/24p to SD miniDV DUB

I shot some footage on 1080i/24p and wanted to transfer it within my HVX200a to MiniDV, but in the thumbnail setting it had the red numbers in the corners eventhough it was in the same mode.
On the same day I shot some footage on 720p/24p and transferred to SD with no issues.

What am I doing wrong in the 1080 mode? Can the footage be Dubbed to SD?

Thanks,

Balint

If you changed record modes later in the day to 720, you have to go back to 1080/24p in your record mode settings to work with the thumbnails for a clip that was already recorded in 1080/24p.

I hope that makes sense. Let me know if I need to clarify.

Thanks for the reply.
I did switch back to 1080 mode and it still gave me red numbers in the thumbnails in Dub mode.
I will try it again maybe I made a mistake.
Thanks again,

Hi guys,

I didn't know you could dub HD footage recorded on p2 cards onto the SD tape inside the HVx200. What happens with the footage is it down converted, HD SD???
And then can you just log and capture from the SD tape into FCP?

Or have I just the completely the wrong end of the stick...lol..?

Cheers

Indy, You didn't get the wrong end of the stick... Yes, You can transfer P2 HD Footage to the Tape Drive, and yes, it gets down converted to SD. I've done it in the field when all I had was a 4 gig card a few years back. It isn't all that difficult to pull off.

blimy... that's good... thanks NC17z

Even though it gets down converted to SD would the footage be a better quality SD?
If it's exactly the same SD as you would record to the tape I can't see the point when you may as well just record to tape?

Cheers

Recorded straight to DV will look very slightly better than downconverted footage will.

The main reasons to do the dubbing are:
1) if you want to use variable frame rates in your standard-def DV production
2) if you want to give someone a tape, someone who can't use P2 or can't or doesn't want to use HD.
