1080i/24p to DVD

I am having trouble with final output of a project to DVD. No matter what compression settings I use, I am getting really bad interlacing effects on any fast motion. Here is how my workflow is going:

Material shot with HVX at 1080i/24p. Avid project started at 1080/60i. HVX material edited along with some still images imported into this 1080i avid timeline. Outputting quicktime reference file and then have tried compressing with either Adobe Encore CS4 or Sorenson Squeeze 4.5. No matter what settings I use for compression, these horizontal lines remain. I have played with the field order (tried lower field first, upper field first, and progressive) in Encore, and I have tried using the DVD_NTSC_Large preset from Squeeze. No luck. Anyone have ideas where I may be going wrong? My final timeline is only 10 minutes long, so I am not hampered by compression limits as far as fitting things on a DVD.

Thanks,
Craig

Sounds like you forgot to do a video mixdown before exporting the ref file. Avid has yet to fix this bug for some reason.

That was my guess too. Somewhere in your timeline there's a clip that is of another resolution. I used to get this a lot when mixing 720x486 & 1 dv clip of 720x480.

Thanks for the replies, I will try this. Never heard of this "feature" of Avid before. Out of curiosity, what would have caused this? I have on my timeline HVX footage recorded at 1080i/24p, a few clips are sped up using the trim-to-fit effect, and I have some still images that have a pan-and-scan effect on them. The stills have higher than 1080 resolution, but I wouldn't think this would affect my timeline like that....hmmm.

And just for the record, after I mixdown the videeo tracks and export my QT reference file, which field order will I need to use when doing the MPEG-2 conversion?

Thanks

Well here is what seems to work.

In avid, change the project format to 30i. Do a video mixdown of the entire sequence to DV25. Do an audio mixdown. Start a new sequence and add these audio and video files. Export a qt ref file. Import it into sorenson and compress to mpg2 using LOWER FIELD FIRST. If doing the compression in Encore, must use UPPER FIELD FIRST. Don't ask me why....

thanks for helping Grinner and MikeyP.

Oh and if anyone has a need for a stack of about 30 formerly blank DVDs let me know. This took a lot of testing.

You never said that you were going to SD DVD, I would have told you that right away. The other thing you can do is to TRANSCODE your sequence to DV25, render, export and you would have saved 24 of those DVDs. We use this method all the time for 1080i & 720P projects to SD DVD, its flawless.
