Hey all

if anyone could give me a good reason that I should shoot 1080i 24p over 720p 24pn I would like to hear it now for a feature documentary.

I'm going to be shooting a feature documentary and I am debating between the two settings.

I know that "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" a feature documentary and I believe "Confessions of a Superhero" were both shot on hvx 200.

I'm just not sure what settings, in terms of, 1080i or 720p????

I would prefer to shoot on 720p 24pn for card space issues but if I am going to shoot myself in the foot for doing so I will invest in more cards.

I don't care so much about the look its more just in distribution of the feature documentary will shooting 720p 24pn hurt me. I have also heard that a lot of people can just up-rez the finished 720p product to 1080 but not sure about that either.

If anyone has any insight I would really appreciate it. Oh and I am shooting tomorrow so the sooner the better....

thanks fellow dvxusers :)

It won't make any difference that matters. Iraq In Fragments got nominated for an Oscar for feature doc, and it's gotten released nationwide and played in the theaters, and it was shot in 480/24p on a standard-def DVX100.

Burma VJ is nominated for an Oscar in the best documentary category this year, and it seems like it was shot on little handheld anything-and-everything cameras that the filmmakers gave to the Burmese people.

720/24p will give you about 85% of the resolution of 1080/24p, but takes up a little over 1/3 as much space. If you're not that worried about the look, and you're more concerned with card space, then go right ahead, 720/24pN sounds ideal for what you're doing.

Barry,

thank you for that response

I kind of know that too...its just so many people tell you 1080 1080....

I know that jesus camp was shot on dvx 100's

and it is one of the most popular documentaries out there right now....

so yeah it doesn't make sense to worry so much

If there is a 1080 issue I can always uprez which I know a lot of people have done with their 720p 24pn footage...

thanks again Barry....

This is a question I asked awhile back and was told that shooting a feature film (Not Documentary) I would be better off shooting in 720p/24pn then 1080i/24pa.

I'm looking for the best quality footage and output may be in Blue Ray. Updated feed back would help. Just in case it makes any differences I'm editing on Vegas Pro 8.0A and I have two (2) 1.5 T external hard drives.

The best quality is 1080/24pA. But 720/24pN takes up 40% as much space, and the quality isn't much less at all, so for many it's the practical choice.
