1080 vs. 720

I've been doing some research about the HVX200, and I'm thinking I'm going to use it for my next short.

However, I haven't really encountered any commentary on whether or not it's worth shooting 1080 over 720. I'm sure I just haven't searched this site well enough. Anybody know, or have a link to that conversation?

Also, I'm curious as to if you shoot letterbox 16:9 if that is 1080 or if it's chopped at the top and bottom, thus lowering resolution?

What I've heard is that 1080 is definetly better than 720 as far as resolution. But alot of people are choosing 720 because the camera lets you under cranck and over cranck with it. so your slow motions are cinema style smooth. also it saves on space and if you are shooting to a p2 card then you might want that. I was just at the screening of Illegal in Burbank CA, and they shot 720p and projected on a big screen it looked amazing. If you are for sure transfering to film, then 1080 should be highly considered. That is of course if you are not doing slow mo shots.
16:9 is 1080, so no resolution loss there. (its something like 1440x1080)
good luck.

1080 is sharper than 720. by about 10-15%. While that sounds like it has bad 1080, the truth is, the HVX just has VERY good 720. But definitlvly, if you shoot 1080 there is more resolution, and a 1080->720 Downconvert on final out put yields a RAzor sharp 720p picture. It looks amazing.

Again, i reccomenf shooting 1080 for everythign thats important. the extra resolution will not hurt you in any way. plus for off speed things, like slomo/overcrank, it will be hard to notice the slight drop in resolution for thoes shots, if they are super beautfiul likei hope they will be! :)

well Make your Final master in 1080P. But theres no distribution method for 1080P right now. ( unless blue ray and HDDVD can do it. but i dont know anyone using them) but for now, make a 720P viewing copy, cause that can be bradcast, and put into WMVHD dvd discs. so at least you can show it.
