1080 Editing Monitor Advice/Question

Does anyone use a consumer 1080p monitor/LCD HDTV for editing to view HD material? Is this good enough?

This is my first jump into an HD monitor for editing. I have always used a broadcast Sony PVM series monitor for SD editing. You know the typical calibration, throw the color bars on the screen and adjust the brightness, chroma, phase and contrast, etc...

Can I get away with a Samsung or Sony LCD HDTV and a decklink hdmi card for HD editing. Such a cheap solution compared to a Sony LUMA monitor.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, comments, advice.

Good enough for what? Color correction, etc

And on what platform, which is a big issue.

For example, Matrox MXO is pretty good on a Mac.

I have a Mac with Decklink Multibridge Extreme. Thinking of adding intensity card for HDMI output. I have all the output goodies, HD-SDI, SD-SDI, Component, Composite etc....

Here's a good analogy:

I learned to drive on my parents Mercedes Benz S class. Thats the only car i drove for years. Later when i bought my own car, i bought an Acura TL since that's all i could afford. I thought ever car drives like an S Class. My initial response was my TL sucks (obviously after driving an S class). For my friends who drove cheap compact cars, my TL was awesome to them. All cars will get you to your destination and each has benefits and flaws.

So here's my question.

What do I loose by using a consumer 1080 LCD HDTV (my acura) vs. a Sony LUMA (a mercedes) or equivalent? Crushed Blacks, Popped Whites, contrast, etc.... Just trying to determine what I really need and what I can get away with.

My question is whether the Intensity board will support 24pn timelines out HDMI.

Ah, yes, that old question!

Well, never having seen a clear answer, I bought an intensity a while back, and YES, with FCP at least, it plays back material from a 23.98 timeline (using the 59.94 output presets).

Yes, it has audio - which is often necessary since it's often pretty out-of-sync with the built-in audio.

You need to install some Blackmagic drivers - the latest are available on the Blackmagic website.

Definitely a worthwhile investment!
