1080/24p on tape? Does it work?

P2 and Firewire solutions look like the best for storage from the DVX-200, but I wonder how does the miniDV tape work to capture 1080/24P with DVCProHD.

I've heard that tape does not record that.

Does it really work and do we get this HD image on tape?
Thanks a lot for any coments.

The HVX records 1080 to P2 only. The HVX is not an HDV camcorder therefore it only records SD to tape. It does however still record 24p, 30p, and 60i to tape in SD so at least your not stuck at 60i. The HVX is made to record its multiple formats in HD but on the P2 cards only or some form of output like a firestore.

Thanks

Thanks

Kyle,
I guess P2 cards and a Firestore or Citidisk are still the best for this camera.
1080 lines on a mini DV tape would be really expecting to much of a miracle, isn´t it.
Thanks a lot.

I remember a while back there was a piece of software that would allow you to back up info to MiniDV tapes to a camcorder through firewire. I tried the demo and it actually worked (a tick slow, but certainly interesting). If nothing else, it could potentially be another good solution for archiving footage.

"DV Backup app from Tim Hewett's Coolatoola.com. Unlike the Windows Firestreamer solution, DV Backup is a self-contained backup solution for Mac OS X. DV Backup handles the tape management as well as configuring and executing the actual backup process. DV Backup sells for $50, with an LE version priced at $20. The LE version lacks tape spanning and selectable file recovery options and does not support scheduled backups. DV Backup supports maxium storage sizes of 11.5GB in SP mode or 17.5GB in LP mode."

The downside obviously is...

"How Fast is Backing up to MiniDV?

According to the DV Backup help files, expect to transfer approximately 187MB per minute with no protection or about 94MB per minute using the full duplication mode. My own experience using Firestreamer is about one hour to fill an SP mode MiniDV tape with no compression. Your mileage may vary."

Anyway, point being - it would be interesting if Panasonic could figure out a way to make this work internally and faster. If I were making wishes for the HVX - this is what I'd wish for next.
