1080/24P looks jittery/not smooth...

Resident noob again....just messing around with kids in pool (is this like photographers taking pics of their cats? haha) and shot in 1080/24p
Now looking at the clips on the camera and in finalcut, they seem very 'un'smooth and jittery. Is this another thing that I did wrong with some settings? or will it look smooth once I process the file or something?
thanks

HEH at a shutter speed of 1/500th your making the stutter worse.

Think of it in these terms the shutter speed determines how long the shutter remains open, so at 1/48th its open longer than 1/500th. So in a pan the shutter is open for less time on the 1/500th opposed to 1/48th, thus the images look very clear but the adverse effect is that the short time the shutter is open, when you get to your next frame the camera has moved a greater distance again as opposed to 1/48th so the shot appears to stutter.

Usual shutter for 24fps is 1/48th, unless theres a reason to shoot higher for a particular approach to a shot.

Noel beat me to it. Traditional film has a shutter speed of 1/48, unless you have a specific look (i.e. Private Ryan) that you're going for. Use that and all should be fine.

Thanks Noel!
Not only do I think I shot in 500th, I think the first few tries I had 'shutter off' meaning it does it automatically right? so probably went crazy high, 1000th, etc....

ugh haha

"Shutter off" defaults back to 1/48 for 24p, so even if you had set it to 1/500, if you turn it off it goes to 1/48. Ideally, unless you need to set a certain shutter speed, you should just leave it set to "off".

I would try shooting again tomorrow if you have time with shutter off and OIS off. Also, bear in mind that 24p will naturally look slightly more "jittery" than say 30p or 60i just by virtue of the lower framerate.
