1080 24p into Avid - frame rate problems

Hello All

Ok, basic project info :

Shot on HVX, 1080/24p.
Imported into Avid Symphony with two different methods (copy directly to Media Files folder, and using Media Tool to drive).

PROBLEM
Footage will not open in a 1080 24p, or 1080 29.97 project. Will only open in 1080 59.97.

When playing back the footage, there is some random stutter/lagging. Every 5TH frame is a duplicate of the previous one. The lagging is not continous, it occurs at random, sometime the footage plays fine.

I looked into the clip info files (the .xml files), and it mentions a 2:3 pulldown. From what I know so far, it seems to me like the camera did a pulldown which makes the 59.97 footage into 24p, however, Avid is not reading the pulldown. This is just a guess though, I really have no idea whats going on.

Ive read through a lot of the forum, and it sounds like one possible solution would be to export every clip as quicktime, same as source, and import into a 24p project.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you!

Since the camera does not record native 23.976 when in 1080p mode, it is always recording to 59.94 with an added 2:3 pulldown - either with ADVANCED or NORMAL pulldown. In Panasonic nomenclature, that would include an "N" in the menu selection as in 720p/24pN for native 23.976 recording.

Avid does not support deinterlacing of 2:3 pulldown during import of file based media that has a 2:3 pulldown. So your only choice is to work in a 1080i.59.94 project type.

One possible workaround is to do a 2:3 removal (from the effects palette) to the clip on the timeline - export picture and sound separately and then bring into a 23.976 project. Once imported, do an AutoSync of the two clips.

Ok, I understand the problem now. Ill try what you said. It wont be too much of a hassle because we were running a dual sound system, so I would have to sync anyways.

Thanks man

Ok, so I tried what you told me to. I still have a couple problems.

1. Do you know the exact settings that I should use on the pulldown effect? Ive tried many different combinations, it seems the best one is fluidmotion render, however, that takes hours... Im just wandering if there is something faster.

2. Once I export as quicktime, if I export 'Same as Source', wont it still be 60i footage, despite the effect? Is there any way to export the quicktime as 24p?

Thank you very much for your help, you are saving an entire project.

I need to look at the 2:3 removal effect - I am so rarely ever in a 30i type project that I am a little rusty on some of the effects meant for that format.

It won't be 60i anymore, since you have shortened it by 20% via the 2:3 removal. When importing that into a 23.976 project, it will play back at that rate, and get back to normal speed to sync with the audio.

I will try to look into it - NAB preparation has been all consuming so I am not promising anything - hopefully someone can jump in as well of they have used this effect.

interesting - i shoot at 1080i 24p and brought it in a 1080i 59.94 timeline and never noticed that - maybe I am not being that observant.

I'm confused about something simillar. I've been shooting a project with a cinematographer I hired who has an HVX. My footage is in 720p, but I'm having the same issue with having to import it as 59.94. This is what he told me.

"The footage is 720/24p. The HVX always records 60 frames/sec, the 24 frames you use are marked frames that the editing program recognizes. You must use the setting 720/60(59.94) and you get the footage playing back at the right setting."

My question is when I export it am I exporting it as 60 or do I have to do something special to make it 24?
