I'm looking for a nice macro lens. I have an 85mm 1.8 but I'd like something much more closer for extreme close up shots such as a candle light burning, etc. Is this a good lens to have? If not, are there any good macro lenses that anyone can suggest?
Canon makes many different macro lenses, including some that are L lenses. ( high performance professional lenses )
If you want a fast macro lens, I think Zeiss is the only manufacturer to make a 100mm f/2.0 Macro lens for Canon cameras. ( totally manual lens, so no AF ) Not a cheap lens, but it's a very good lens.
Otherwise, Canon makes a 100mm f/2.8 macro lens in both standard and L grade formats. ( L grade is better, but costs twice as much )
If you want a low-cost solution to shooting close-up images, you might want to try Canon extension-tubes, that will allow you to focus much closer with your 85mm f/1.8 lens. This lens won't record the same amount of detail as a macro lens, and it will distort more, but it might be good enough depending on what you are trying to shoot.
