100hz Hum in Headphone Jack

So I just purchased a second DVX100 for my collection. Bought it used from Ebay. Used it all summer no problem, until last weekend I rented it out to a client. On the day of the shoot they call me up saying that there is a problem with the audio and they have noise. I walk them through all the obvious things, and then end up going down to the shoot to confirm what they were talking about. When you turn the camera on, it plays a 100hz tone fairly loudly in the headphone and all the audio is garbled. It remains constant if you turn on or off phantom powerr, switch the inputs, mic/line etc. Doesn't matter. Strange thing is it records audio to tape perfectly. When I switch to VCR mode, the tone jumps to about 500hz at the same volume. Tried different headphones too.

Anyone heard of this? Do I just have a bumb camera? Am I the only one with crap luck?

Yeah man I heard this too and was like oh what the heck! I watched the footage back and noticed it was fine so figured it was just what the camera does. I just ignore it and hopefully when something weird happens I can distinguish it from this 100hz tone.

definately not supposed to do that!! :undecided Looks like we are just stuck with crappy cameras. Anyone know of any solutions other than 80/hr repair place?

. . .

OK. I give up. If it records to tape without it, how do you know what the freqs are?

I noticed an audible hum in my DVX about a month ago. I was wearing cheap Sony headphones and I was using one channel fed from a Panasonic shotgun mike. It continued throughout the shoot. I was concerned, but fortunately it did not wind up on the audio on the tape. Since then, the same setup was used in a different location, however, no hum. I think that it must have something to do with the lights and the frequency the electrical emitted in the environment.

Have you tried with other headsets then? Could be a connection problem, or some dirt stuck in the mini jack.

It sounds like vtr board need to be replace, not cheap, just live with the hum till
u can't take it , but it may be the audio out put ic is bad or bad contacts , need
a tech. to verify .

This happened to me too. I noticed that it does not happen with specific headphones so it may just be you have a pair of cheap headphones. Try some studio style headphones and see if that works better for you.

However, as one poster to this thread said, it may depend on electrical interference from something in the room.

yah I thought it was the lights on set.. but it does it consitently no matter where you are. I even tried it here in the studio to double check. The headphones are Sony MDR's.. pretty decent pair. I tried it with a pair of cheapies.. same thing. I am only guessing on the actually frequency of the hum. Didn't hook it up to a spectrum anazlyzer or anything.. just sort of pinpointing it in that general area.

Like you said.. probably the board or something. Guess it is just my luck. Thanks anyways! :undecided

wow that sucks! haha oh well, hopefully I'm just using some crap headphones. I've already learned to deal with it so...I guess i'm all good except my camera is hurting on the inside : (
