100B issues and concerns

I've had two issues with the 100b.

- dropped frames/stutter, or some kind of weird "registration" issue with footage. Can't fully explain this, and need to check my NLE system further, but over 10 1-hour tapes, I had 5 of these "stuttering" sections. I shot with a 100a, GY500 and Sony D30 DVCAM camcorder with no issues the same week (all digitized to my system perfectly). Either my DVStorm doesn't like the 100B footage, or the camera is the culprit. I need to do more tests to find out.

- the sound on my 100B is very thin and "metallic" sounding. My TRAM mic which sounds amazing on the 100A or the GY500, has absolutely no bottom end on the 100B, something is just off whack here.

- the eject button sometimes fails to open the side door, you click and click and nothing happens. Eventually it opens though.

Anyhow, I'm wondering if the 100B is really an improvement over the 100a or did Panasonic reduce production costs by using cheaper parts on the 100B?

I'm taking the camera to Panasonic to see what's going on. The stuttering problem, I've never seen on any DV camera before, my NLE apps have never dropped frames ever!!!!

What did you capture with? Sounds like dropped frames to me. Check your capture device. If you play the footage back in another cam does it still stutter?(I use a cheap JVC for capture).

The thin audio may be the wind-cut filter in the menu. I would check that first. Other then making audio levels a bit hotter, Panasonic didn't change anything with the audio on the 100B.

Hope this helps,

The stuttering problem is something I've never seen on my system before. Like a bunch of frames are missing, example, over a 20 second spot, the image seems to jump cut. I've never had dropped frames using Edius/DVStorm card.

I'm going to take out the original camera footage today and have a look at those spots. The tape I'm using is brand new Fuji DV tape, purchased at a reliable Toronto DV shop. Not a fan of Panasonic tape.

In regards to the wind noise EQ thing, in fact, that's exactly what it sounds like. I'm going into the menu today to see, but I never touched the audio menu in the 100b. It's all default factory settings. Not sure why the audio would be rolled off.

One thing, to an untrained "ear" the audio on the 100b might sound fine (crisp and bright). But I know my Tram mics, and I also work with three other DV cameras (the 100b is the only camera with some kind of high end boost that I have to EQ out in post).

Other than the mentioned issues he 100b is an excellent camera.

Okay, just checked my camera tapes and the problem sections were okay on the actual tapes, so there must have been dropped frames during digitizing. So, the 100b is fine in that department.

I checked the 100b menu and could not find any EQ settings or audio adjustments that made any difference. My Trams going into the 100b using phamtom power 48v, sound high ended and lack bass. In fact, so does the camera mic.

I'm going to take it to the shop I bought it and check the audio on another 100b and see if I get the same thing. Maybe all the 100b's are tuned hotter, with more high end. Anyhow, if that's the case, the 100a sounds a lot better.

I've found that my Oktava run directly into the 100b is WAY too hot with default settings and 12 o'clock on the record levels. It distorts badly with no headroom.
I haven't heard it on a non-B, but I was suprised just how high it was peaking.

Just ran the first test on our new 102b (100b for everyone else). There is a slight delay somewhere in the audio circuits when live monitoring in camera mode. This results in the audio chorusing a little, a similar effect to what the XDCam had before the latest patch was uploaded to the camera.

Anyone else have this issue?

You can fix that in the menu.
You can choose to monitor live or monitor tape.
If you monitor live, you won't get the delay.

The delay occurs in 24p and 24pa modes. the camera buffers 2 frames of video to make the blended frames for 2:3 pulldown. The camera buffers video but not audio and this way you hear an echo and sync difference. The 100b (102b) corrected this. Under item 7 in the menu (other functions) set the HP option to live not tape and you will resolve this when monitoring audio.

Interesting. Does this delay occur in any modes other than 24p and 24pa on the NTSC camera? This is the PAL camera (102b) and it does it in ALL modes, i.e 50i and 25p.
