100a Rebate Extended Through December

Just a FYI, becasue I know there was no offical word, only speculation:

The $500 DVX100a rebate has offically been extended though December, making the decision to buy a 100b with a $200 rebate even more difficult.

Hmmm... is 16:9 Aspect Display Mode worth $300 plus tapes and a battery? This is the only new feature that interests me and I just don't know the answer. How dificult is is to frame shots accuratly in squeeze/letterbox mode using the 100a display? Experienced shooters, do you offen get the result you were expecting as far as your frame is concerned?

I do plan on shooting a lot of 16:9 footage.... looking for opinions.

Thanks
~ Jim

One thing to be aware of is that Panasonic is no longer producing the 100A's so once a dealer sells out....that's it.... no more. That being the case, if you know a dealer that has one and you are leaning that way, you may want to move on it quickly before it's gone.

We are in that situation. We sold out of all of our A's in October.

Take the lowest-offered pricing for the 100b and compare it with the 100a at a legitimate authorized-dealler, and you compare AbelCine ($3445 for 100b) with B&H ($3400 for 100a). The price difference there would be $345, so it's kind of close to $300.

But I kind of doubt Panasonic will renew the $500 rebate. It's just speculation right now.

Of course, the price difference I got is based on the assumptions that AbelCine offers the lowest pricing for the 100b (correct me if I'm wrong), and that B&H offers the lowest pricing for the 100a (hell, they are the only authorized dealer I know of who are still selling the thing!)

I suggest that you wait to see if the rebate is in fact renewed, and if so, order the 100a if you feel that the $345 price difference is not worth it. If it's not renewed, just order the 100b; maybe by then, the price difference will not be as high, as more dealers begin to lower their pricing to compete I guess.

Not sure if this would work, but you could always bid on the 100b from a reliable eBay seller who claims that the rebate has not been cashed in; that way, the price will be low, and you can still redeem the rebate! But in most cases, the sellers will have already sent in the form and redeemed it. You could also try the DVXUser.com marketplace. But the place you shouldn't be looking are the unauthorized dealers. If you want cheap, eBay is a whole lot more safer than those guys, as long as you do your research and pay through PayPal.

Thanks for the advise Gordon. But, it's no longer speculation, the 100a rebate has been extended, it's offical. That's why I started the thread, because it makes the decision between the two a matter of about $300, give or take.

Barry, I'll take your word on the 24p echo. I think am going to get the 100b

Is this the same as the echo problem when using headphones while recording in 24p mode? I'm not so experienced, so is it crucial to wear headphones during a shoot?

On the 100a, the audio output is to the headphone is delayed by a couple of frames from the video. Sometimes it can be annoying. But the audio is laid down on tape in sync with the video.

How does one get the rebate for the DVX100A? Is there a coupon? I want to buy one from PriceRite.com for $2,499.00 and then modify it to use the Andromeda. (No need for any warranty since it voids one)

There's no chance that PriceRite will actually sell it to you for $2499. They'll end up charging (after shipping, handling, and a bunch of grossly overpriced accessories) a bundle price that somehow all magically adds up to -- hmm, wouldn't you know it, about $3300. Or about the same as you could get it from an authorized dealer for.

And there's very little, and perhaps no, chance that a PriceRite camera would qualify for the rebate. They're not an authorized dealer and most likely don't have authorized US product.

The rebate site is on-line, but as Barry noted, it is unlikely that you would qualify for the rebate because the price is just too low. They are probably selling a gray market product. The offer for the rebate is only on US product. At this point I believe the only dealer that has them left is B & H. So if you want one, you should hurry.

Best,

Jan
