100a and DV Rack

Will the DVX reliably trigger record/pause with DV Rack? I ask because my nNovia QC doesn't do this...you have to use the drive's buttons.

it will if and only if you have a tape in the deck - if you do not have a tape you need to start the record on the computer

"Tapeless" recording that requires a tape! I think there's a setting on the DVX to override this, but I guess it doesn't work.

Is there some kind of sensor in the DVX's tape well that can be fooled?

As far as i know there is no setting on the dvx to record without a tape since it is intended to be used with a tape. I could be wrong but i havent found a way.

You can perform tapeless shoots by hitting record on the laptop. Also if you record with a tape you have an instant archive and an instant digitized copy

You will have to use the DV rack record button. With no tape the DVX wont record [for obvious reasons] Why is recording from the DV rack UI a problem?

Dakotapod, only because the controls are right there on the camera...not a cable's length away.
Do you mean won't record or won't trigger recording on the laptop? It's the latter for the QC, which just sucks in whatever's coming out the FW port. You don't need a tape for that, but you do need to use the QC's buttons and you get the "tape missing" icon flashing on the DVX's LCD.

According to Barry's book when using the DVX with the DVrack if you set the cameras "DV control" to just "EXT" it will control DVrack with the camera and not record to tape. You need a tape in camera, but it wont use it.

I keep getting "External DV Disconnect" - Something I'm doing wrong I'm sure... but give it a try.

Hope this helps.

Dakotapod, not run and gun, really, but something like a modest dolly or tracking shot. I'd use a long cable, but wouldn't be able to see the laptop. Seems like a completely body-mounted system would be handy sometimes.

MattinSTL has a neat set up for his LCD:

Not sure if this would have the strength to hold a laptop with mods but take a peek.

I'd be less worried about strength and more about imbalance...camera and laptop could tip over.

I wonder what door-to-door survey people use?

the bad thing is that with a tape inside the hour meter will b running because the heads are "engaged" right? eventough it's just controlling DVRack.
that's why in theory I rather have someone carry the laptop arround than putting hours on my camera. haven't done it yet :(

there are a few mini sized laptops on the market that would let you run dv rack but have a much smaller laptop to drag around.

Unix, do you mean the tape is running and wearing out the heads, or only the meter is running and lowering the DVX's resale value?
