DOC: 100 Yen: The Japanese Arcade Experience

Two years in the making, finally released the Official trailer.

Teaser and website is online here: www.100yenfilm.com

We are aiming to release the film later this year in English and Japanese with French, Spanish and possibly Thai releases a little later.

All filmed on location in Japan, Canada and Las Vegas. Shot on Canon DSLRs. Mostly Nikon Glass.

For interviews we had 2x Coolights LED 600 and 2x LED brick lights 90 watt ish all battery powered which was GREAT for traveling both big fixtures and stands fit into one nice pelican case that we wheeled all across Japan.

We got unrestricted access to Taito arcades before they opened and got to check out SEGAs headquarters in Tokyo. We met some amazing people and had a blast doing it. The editing has been somewhat of a nightmare being that there really aren't many Japanese speaking editors where i'm from so it's been a grind but we're wrapping up.

Thoughts/comments are welcome!

If you have any questions about the project or would like me to share more info about how it all came to be, just ask! I'd love to talk more about the behind the scenes aspects.

That looks great! Even the trailer tells a nice story, I imagine the full film will be great fun, and a cool look at an insider's world. What sparked your idea for the doc? Good luck with the final edit, I'm looking forward to seeing the film...

It's really hard to read the lower thirds since there is a lag with the animation before it's easy to see the text clearly, and then the addition of subtitles that you're also reading.

I feel like your trailer is like a mini documentary already! I remember we talked about your movie a year ago but can't find the thread anymore, did you delete it?
The documentary lloks awesome and having an arcade at home myself I'm really curious about the final film!

I just played a few games on my arcade today, lol. I'll be keen to see this.

Thanks for checking it out :)

I definitely wanted to make it feel like a short version of the overall story.

We've been picked up recently by WIRED.com! http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2012/04/100-yen-documentary/

You can read another interview here as well: http://turnstylenews.com/2012/04/03...r-chat-with-’100-yen’-director-brad-crawford/

We're negotiating our world-premiere now with some big organizations, hopefully all goes well!

but ya, Gary, there's definitely a lot of stuff on screen to ingest, I was fighting with that. The final film will give the viewer a lot more breathing room it's just tough to fit everything into a trailer.

The idea for the film came from my personal experience living in Japan. It was incredible to see that arcades still exist and when I started investigating, the story really fell into my lap.

I'll try to check this post more regularly.
