You're right, that is a shitload of storage. It's actually beyond my comprehension, especially when one considers that an Apple 3.5 terabyte Xserve RAID costs approximately $10k and yet is only a fraction of the storage space of what could theoretically be placed on a disk the size of a CD. Such advancements in disk storage will virtually eliminate lossy compression algorithms as we currently know it. Once this nanotechnology is perfected, it would revolutionize the film and audio industry like never before. Of course, it would take supercomputers to be able to push this amount of data, but the bottom line is that lossy compression would truly be a thing of the past. Just imagine editing a movie as often as one likes without worrying about degradation in image quality.

I think these are amazing times.

Of course, all this technology will probably be squashed once those bloodsucker whores at the MPAA start whining about copy protection. May every one of those sons-of-bitches rot in the lowest levels of hell. Hollywood and the studios have done more, than any other body, to thwart the advances made in the electronics industry for their own selfish gain. :o

I don't see what the problem is. All they have to do is use smaller bytes...

its not that easy, the density for 100 TB in 3.5" size is amzing, thats why they cannot just use 2D data structure, rather 3D data structure, ie holograpic techonoloy

Re: 100 Terabyte 3.5 in Disk Storage

If you could deliver this today, say with a PCI-X interface that could max out the possible data transfer rate over that buss, and even if your manufacturing and packaging cost per unit was an unreasonably low $500USD. What would YOU charge for it? Seeing as how that concept has a fantastic WOW factor, and nobody else would be entering the market very soon with anything comparable. The IT community would be all over it with more capital than any indie filmmaker could ever imagine. Big Hollywood studios and animation houses, post production groups doing DI on huge budget film based productions would be interested too. The cost could very easily, and justifiably, be 15,000 - $25,000 at the low end. See you in 2019.

Re: 100 Terabyte 3.5 in Disk Storage

I hope they figure this out soon. Im 90% on my way to the HD suite, just need the damn disk arrays to deal with HD streams.

What is a little retarded is that all these HD SDI cards cant just take the compressed stream of HDCAM tape, they uncompresss the stream and create alot of unneeded overhead.
