100/200?

I currently have a Panasonic PV GS400 which is pretty good, but I am fixing to go into business for myself and am wanting to upgrade. I am a former tv news photog, using Ikie's and Sony Betas, but have gotten away from that into other areas of the business world. In short, I am drooling over the 100b and positively Pavloving over the 200. Should I just skip the 100 for the 200 or should I take baby steps and go for the 100. I am wondering now that the 200 is out, will the 100b go the way of the gs-400.

Hmmm...

Hmmm...

I am beginning to wonder if, when, yall read this post, the word "POSEUR!" crosses your minds.

Sour grapes...

If it were me and I had the money, I'd jump straight to the HVX200. But I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with the DVX100B. I know I have the DVX100A and I love it. That being said, I'd love to have an HVX200. But who knows, Monday is almost upon us and we are about to find out where RED fits into the picture.

i just got my dvx100b, i do love it, but i still drool over the 200. My idea is to make a name for myself and some cash off my 100 and then in a year or 2 buy a 200. So far business with my 100 is good.

Hey JD, can you tell us a little more about what you want to do with the camera, then we might be able to help a little more.

One thing to remember (please ignore if you've solved this dilemma) that I learned, by, for once, doing the smart thing, is that you will probably need more than just a camera. There are cases, tripods, extra batteries, mics and lights just to name a few. If you have none of those, and prefere to buy, then budget probably as much again for basic versions of that stuff.

I am right there with ya, Aza. I posted in the Business section what I am planning on doing with the business. With the 100b or 200 (. I plan on providing local video productions (but not limited to, graduations, school plays etc) photo montage, video memories, dups, conversions, freelance stringer, etc. ) The tripod I am planning on getting are Bogen 503 fluid head with Manfrotto sticks. Using Lowelpro lights and Azden wireless mics(lav and handheld). Pretty much what I had when I was shooting local news. I could never have enough batts with my Ikegami 47 cam with a Beta recorder docked. So I plan on at least 4 back up batts behind the included one in the box.
I have been thinking that my camera should reflect the needs of my clients. With HD still out there over the rainbow, but not far off, the 200 would be logical. However, most of the people in my city are still watching tube tvs and playing with vhs-c cameras. (Evidence of what I witnessed during my daughter's recent basketball season.) So, the 100b is where I will but my cash on.

On the other hand...the 200 will downrez to SD, so you could still keep those folks satisfied.
Thanks for all the input...
But will I be sacrificing quality downrezzing when sd is non native(is that a wordphrase?) It would be nice but recording 4 mins of footage on $500. or more p2 discs may not be cost effective. event tho the 200 can shoot minidv.

Did I misunderstand? As far as I can tell, the 200 will record to MiniDV tape just like normal...except you'll retain some of the better features of the HDness of it. It doesn't sound to me like the quality would be any less than "native" SD. (Although I suppose it would depend on the shrinking algorithms used.)

http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/HVX200/ is where I've gotten my info. Not hands on. (I wish! :) )

From my understanding, the HVX could be used just as a 16:9 native DVX (if you wanted to). It'll record SD DV25 to MiniDV tape just like a DVX will.

That is also my understanding, the advantage here being native 16:9
