10 bulb CFL Brutte (Sample Video)

Ryan these have an interesting situation. Yes they are lower wattage but because they are in a focused housing (like an outside floodlight) the output is actually stronger than the CFL's, yet is soft enough to use pretty close.

So one these lights put out the equivalent of a 275 - 300w tungsten light? (That is what the 65w CFL's put out.) If so, that is very good news!

I didn't give any equivalent tungsten output because I haven't measured these lights compared to tungsten. I don't use tungsten anymore only CFL's and LEDs.
My experience with CFL's is that yes they put out an equivalent to its incandescent brother but these are bare bulbs and generate the output 360 degrees and therefore have a less forward illumination. Any bulb that is built in a reflector housing forces the light forward and with a spread that's measured in degrees. A 20 watt bulb in a reflector can rival a 100 watt bare bulb.
Throw is the problem I have always had with the CFL's in the Fotodiox housing. I built a square housing covered with mylar material to attempt to recover the lost output of the bare bulb effect.
These bulbs that I have found are first multiple LEDS in an R-30 reflector. They throw light forward and yet (because of multiple LEDS) have a softer landing output. I put 4 in an old light bar (from the old 8mm movie days) and was very pleasantly surprised with the lighting.
Let me say this as far as comparison. The 4 LED Bulbs put out much more direct light than (9) 100 watt CFLS in my Fotodiox setup.

Is 60W really the strongest you can get over there Ryan?

I use 105 W and 120 W bulbs.

4 of them in a china ball is real nice.

Got them from Ebay, I´m quite sure they sell them in the US too.

That makes sense. Is there any chance that you can meter them provide some readings- I'd love to know the foot candle output at 3' / 6' / 9' / 12' if possible. If you do not have a meter that does foot candle readings, then can you give me the T-Stop / F-Stop readings @ ISO 320?

Nope- you can put whatever bulbs you want in there. The 65w bulbs that I used require roughly 3" of total clearance (1.5" on either side as measured from the center.) When I bought the bulbs, they were the strongest and highest CRI bulbs that I found that fit in my budget. There are other stronger bulbs out there- 85w, 105w, & 200w. I'm really interested to try out the 200w CFL from Cool Lights- as that seems to be the best light around.

Ryan, I do have meters but not a lot of time, right now I'm trying to turn a Sow's Ear into Gold thanks to a client re writing a script. I will try in the next couple of days to meter a single bulb and a multiple 4.

I completely understand. :) Good luck with that- it is a tough spot- I've been there before...

Thanks for doing that. If I get to it before you do, I'll post my findings as well. (I just have to make it over to Costco and find the bulbs.)
