FS7: 10-bit sequences in PrPro CC

When creating a new sequence in PrPro CC, do I have to go in and either create a custom sequence or check the bit rate in settings in order to preserve the 10-bit color?

Or is there a way in the preferences to make sure I'm always getting the most bit-depth possible when importing footage?

Thx,

AFAIK (and I've been cutting on PP for about 5 years), Premiere will definitely 'notice' the bit depth of your footage (not to be confused with bit rate), and you can't modify that in terms of the clips themselves. If you use a sequence preset such as "AVC-Intra 100 1080p" (or just drag your clip onto the 'new sequence' button, which should "auto-match settings" and do that automatically), and then export from there to a 10bit-capable codec, then your output will retain the full 10-bit colour info of your footage.

Rendering is really the only place where you have a choice of bit-depth. There's a tickbox at the bottom of the sequence settings called "Maximum Bit Depth". If it's ticked then you'll render in 10-bit, if it's not then it'll be something lower (8bit I presume). The downside is that 10bit obviously takes significantly longer to render.

Hope that helps. If in doubt then shoot some gradient-rich skies and check your source/export side-by-side. The difference (if there is any), will be clear!

Cheers,

jason
