GH5 10 bit in Mac finder preview

I know this has been discussed at length in the past, but I just bought a 2019 macbook pro and it's still driving me crazy that I can't preview 10bit GH5/EVA footage in finder. How has this not been fixed yet?

Opening VLC to preview and title clips is so time consuming, does anyone know if there has been any progress made on this? Thanks for any insight.

Because 10bit h.264 is very non standard right now. Most of the playback optimizations and support built into computers is for 8bit which accounts for 99.9% of h.264 content a Mac user would watch.

Its awesome that Panasonic bucked the industry and provided a internal 10bit solution using h.264 but by doing so they created a format that needs special attention to support. That may be something a NLE is willing to add support for but it is a different situation for all media players to add in support for a format that most people will never use.

The 10bit files on the GH5 may be small but this is currently one major drawback to the format vs a format like ProRes or AVCHD.

The h.264 spec has profiles that go all the way up to 14-bit 4:4:4, so it's not something that Panasonic created out of nothing. The problem is that most of the camera industry has ignored the higher end h.264 profiles ( because 8-bit 4:2:0 is good enough for consumers ) and some of the NLE companies have adopted the same attitude.

When I bought my first GH5 I could not edit my 4K 10-bit footage with MAGIX Vegas Pro 14, but I contacted MAGIX and ended up sending them 2 GB of GH5 video samples, which they used to add 4K 10-bit compatibility a few months later. I gave up on Premiere because they were twiddling their thumbs for months with no progress, but the paid version of Davinci Resolve, Edius Pro, and most of the TMPGEnc video applications all had no problems working with GH5 4K 10-bit footage.

I am actively avoiding Apple FCPX because Apple recently killed off support for the Cineform and DNxHD CODECs, and I've got projects edited with FCPX and Cineform that go back many years that are now going to be a pain in the *ss to modify. ( previously Cineform files were native to both Mac and Windows, so you could pass files back and forth between systems with no transcode )

Hi Everyone,
I found it ==> mpv player (on Mac). Previews are all smooth (with my 10 bit 4:2:2 Sony A7S3 files).
So I think GH5/GH5S should be too.
