Hi Guys,

Maybe a little cheesy to post a showreel here, but just finnished it and i'm just excited to share it with fellow filmmakers.
I know most of you all got your honnest and constuctive opinion so I would like to hear what other filmmakers think of it.

I posted my first reel on a forum 4 years ago and got such good feedback I could make it much better with a few small ajustments.

It's is always harder than it seems, to pic out your best shots an show it in about 1 minute.
I shoot more than 50 big and small projects in a year but my reel only contains a few. I am not allowed to use everything in my portfolio so that's to bad.

I would like to hear an opinion if possible, possitive or negative. Fine ether way. Thanks in advance.

This year i'm going to make my first short movie so that promises good things for next reel.

It actually is an allround reel. Most of the time i'm a one man band. Script, filming, lighting and edit.
So more like a production reel.

Ok.

Is there any way to include a non-commercial use waiver in future contracts ? As you know, the reel could use more diversity as a promo vehicle. How willing companies are for that varies on the territory involved, I guess.

For the reel itself; I liked your pace of music vs. cuts. There were some nice camera moves/transitions. I liked some of the "a day in the life of..." feel to the reel. The only suggestions I'd have would be:

Try to find another opening shot. This one isn't too compelling. You had others in your reel that could suffice.
You have a shot of lovers followed by a dead whale on a beach. Huh ? Odd choice, to say the least.
Perhaps space the skiing shots further apart.
The kayaking to the slow motion plus music doesn't work. For that kind of shot to work there should be visually dynamic imagery (jumping, surfing). Make that kayak footage normal speed or use substitute footy.
I liked some of the colours and colour grading choices, but other times it was too aggressive for my taste (skiing footage, crushing the blacks in the corporate stuff).
As aforementioned I liked the "day in the life" feel to the reel, so it might be advisable to include some non-commercial shots (like the lovers) after the 47 second mark, to give it more balance.
It may be just me, but that symbol after "showreel" looks like a question mark, haha :)

Overall, I enjoyed some of it, but would like to see a fuller reel (I understand you were hampered by contracts etc.) Most of my suggestions are a matter of personal taste - not necessarily what's right or wrong. I thought I'd just share some specifics :-) Hope to see a short film from you soon, Joost.

Cheers

Wow great feedback. Can't thank you enough.
This is why I needed a fresh eye on my reel. You mention all kind of stuff I don't see because I'm to much on it.
I will make some chances when I have time. And already have some idea's to improove it.

The symbol symbolise a exclamation mark an eye and a lens, it's my logo.

Your great.
