1.8ghz single vs. 2.0ghz dual

I've heard stick with the old dual 2's not the new dual 2's.

I heard anything below that computer was basically a upgraded G4 not a true G5. That was when the G5's first hit the market.

I would imagine that you could still find the "old" (two weeks ago...) dual 2 with the PCX slot at a good price. I have one that I bought in November and I love it. I just put TIGER on it and its all great...
btw, when did facts start becoming a part of the commentary on here?? :)

I don't think I would spend 2K on a desktop without plans to get several years use out of it....
NO PCI-Express slots on the "new" Dual 2.0. The "old" Dual 2.0 had PCI-Express. Not having
the faster slots severely limits your options for HD, maybe not today, but a couple years from now.
That would be something I would consider pre-requisite on a computer this expensive.
Otherwise, I'd get something to "hold me over" until I needed more speed and PCI-X.

Srry for being so opinionated tonight.. I really feel those slots are super important.

Why? They won't be needed for acquisition or editing with a camera like the HVX200, so it won't make much of a difference unless his parents also plan to buy him a fibre channel RAID or upgrade him to an all HD-SDI workflow. His parents may be generous, but ...

By the way, PCI Express is not the same thing as PCI-X. No Macs to date have had PCI Express, the future successor to both AGP and PCI. PCI Express will give Mac users access to the next generation of video cards, but PCI-X is sort of too esoteric for most people to even buy expansion cards and use. Just thought I'd point that out.

Actually, when the G4 was first introduced, Apple's first G4 machines were reportedly G3's with the new processor engineered into them.

That's not the case with the G5, though. The chipsets and architectures are too different to make that feasible. Now, the speed improvement of those original machines over the old G4s was up for debate, but that's a different story. :)

Appreciate the claification. Now I understand the difference.. Thanks.

GO FOR THE DUAL 2.0!!! I thought you were asking if there is a difference between the dual 1.8 or dual 2.0. Theres not a big difference there. If You can afford go dual. FCP would run a lot smoother.
