is it really that much of a difference btwn the 2? i just want to run fcp on it.

prices:
1349k for the 1.8 single
1799k for the 2.0 dual

could someone explain the difference in KINDERGARDEN terms to me?

any advice? i have my dvx, just need to choose btwn the 2. i need to choose fast, b4 my parents pull out of the deal! :)

with 1gb ram. you can order memory from crutial.com for 1/2 the price apple will charge. and you can get a good deal on harmon jardon or jbl speakers on e-bay ($45-100).

The new Dual 2.0 does not have PCI-X which could be a real bummer if you ever want to do HD. . .
This is pretty much a Dual 1.8-level system with incrementally faster processors, that's about it.

There is a big difference and it is very noticable when useing these machines. go for the dual 2.

Dual. Dual G4's are on par (and sometimes better) than single G5's.

Yes reservoir, maybe WWDC. I hope :)

im basically gonna be shooting in SD. this is sort of a beginners machine. just something that i can learn on. shorts/narratives/videos. not gonna use much graphics. may use motion sometimes, but not much.

You might be okay with a Mac Mini for now and then upgrade to a G5 in 18 months when the newer, quieter, non-liquid-cooled processors are a reality.

You might even see when the next Apple Store FCP demonstration will be in Dallas and go to it.
Check some stuff out.. Spend the least amount possible for what meets your goals. My .02

both computers will work fine, it is a question of speed. speakers and ram are necessary extras, so figure that into your cost.

i sound like a broken record, but you can also save some cash and go with a used computer, like a dual processer g4. just check the fcp specs sheet and make sure it has a dvd burner. i have a dual processor g4 867 mhz with dvd burner (custom install) and it is more than enough computer for what you are describing.

problem with a mac mini is that the hard drive runs at a slower speed than all other models. i have no first hand experience with it, but they have scaled some things back to make it $500 and might not be enough computer for video editing.

thisiswells,
great idea! i will check that out. but i hav been thinking of the 1.8ghz single b/c of low cost. but i also want to get the dual for speed. really cant make up my mind. i really dont want to deal with the mac mini though.

Dude.. you'd be nuts not to get a Dual 2.0 GHz machine...

if your parents are offerring get the dual... why buy a lower quality system when you have the option of a better one?

and trust me.. the speed will be a huge deal. if you want to run iTunes, an instant messenger, Final Cut, Safari and a bazillion other programs.

2 CPU's means you computer will have less thread shuffling to do since you can basically run two CPU intensive things are the same time.

OS X was written with Dual processors in mind.

Tiger will make your comp fly.

I don't think I would spend 2K on a desktop without plans to get several years use out of it....
NO PCI-Express slots on the "new" Dual 2.0. The "old" Dual 2.0 had PCI-Express. Not having
the faster slots severely limits your options for HD, maybe not today, but a couple years from now.
That would be something I would consider pre-requisite on a computer this expensive.
Otherwise, I'd get something to "hold me over" until I needed more speed and PCI-X.

Srry for being so opinionated tonight.. I really feel those slots are super important.
