1/48 with 24Pa

Hey guys, so I've been doing some research on shutter speeds, and it looks like the way to go is 1/48 when shooting 24Pa on my DVX100A. But here's where I'm confused - I set my syncro scan to 1/48.0, giving me 1/48.0 as a selection when scrolling through shutter speeds, but when switching between 1/48.0 and having the shutter turned off altogether it seems to make no difference.

Does 24Pa already have a shutter speed of 1/48 "built in"? And if so, why bother having an "on" button for the shutter? Why not just be able to scroll through them? Hope that makes sense.

Thanks,

Jordan

from my recollection of the manual (what little i know from it) the syncro scan has to do with when ur shooting like a tv screen or computer screen that which flickers. it helps to reduce the flicker. The 1/48 shutter is already a built in selected...u didnt "give" it that selection. It goes 1/24, 1/48, 1/60, 1/120, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000.

film cameras generally shoot at 48 or 60 shutter so i think thats why its better to shoot those speeds in 24p. However it depends on the look u want u can increase for more choppy action or decrease for more blurred movement.

Correct me if i;m wrong in anyway guys.

The default shutter speed in 24p mode, when set to "shutter off", is 1/50th. So no, you're not going to see a whisper of difference between 1/48 and 1/50.

Thanks Barry - that makes sense.

Also, Jambredz, I understand about what syncro scan is supposed to do, but the funny thing is that on my camera, I have all the the pre-set shutter speeds you mentioned EXCEPT 1/48 - and the last selection is whatever I have the syncro scan set to. Is that normal?

I'm going to seize this topic to ask if there's a way I can fix the lights flickering, I mean 50hz lights recorded with a NTSC DVX100B (I'm on a PAL Country). Excuse me Jordini!
