07Q Firmware v2.10.141

Can't wait to start shooting 4k compressed for all my interviews. Will allow so much flexibility in post. Wonder how the image will look scaled down in premiere pro compared to 4k2HD mode.

I would probably get more use out of 4K compressed, but my point was I just want something finished and if 4K2HD 60fps is that much closer (like Dan says), just get it out first then move forward. I would just hate if they put 4K2HD60 on the back shelf to try and get 4K compressed working, then 4 or 5 months down the road it still doesn't work and we have nothing.

$K compressed runs about 800 mbps. Or, about four times the size of Apple ProRes 422(HQ).

Gene, what I was trying to indicate is that while there is significant progress on 4K2HD 60p, it is in fact not yet ready. If it was ready or very near ready then we would release it. But all of these things take time.

Now I am going to type something that I know will not go over well on an FS700 forum.

You are not our only clients. We value you highly, and there has clearly been more work done on behalf of FS700 functionality than any other camera system, but we have other cameras to support as well. 4K compressed is of great use to many clients, including our C500 record option clients. And a whole bunch of other cameras recently shipping or soon to be made available. And 4K compressed is also of significant benefit to FS700 owners. So when choices must be made, a big picture approach is important.

Here's something I noticed while shooting over the last 2 days in 4K raw with the latest firmware on my FS700 -- when the clip spans from disk 1 to disk 2 in the middle of recording, I seem to lose several seconds of audio. For example, clip00077_1 and clip00077_2 will have no missing frames when playing from one to the next in premiere, but as I said, a few seconds of audio is missing from the first. Hope that makes sense.

I'm working around it by pulling the audio from the internally recorded AVCHD file.

In general I try to eject the cards before they fill up completely, but it happened to me twice on my last shoot, and I'm noticing this for the first time.

First I've heard of that issue. I will alert the engineers.

Do you think you'll ever be able to implement standard ProRes 422 (for both 4K2HD and 4K) in addition to the HQ variety that you currently have? I struggle to tell much difference between the two, but the file size is even easier to handle. Sorry if this has been asked before.

4k compressed is definitely what I'm looking forward to most. By a mile. Glad it seems to be the highest priority now.

We plan to support multiple flavors, yes.

Hi Mitch,

First onset use of the new firmware today, I ran into alot of playback issues. Shotting both 4K 25fps and 2K 200fps. I did not mix vision on the SSD's, one for 4K and a separate 2 for the 2K 200fps.

The 2K/200fps raw has constant random playback glitches in the top 3rd of the screen, a blocking of sorts. Random as in if you stop, start and re-cue the footage the glitch will be in another place. Turning the unit on and off again, will sometimes fix itself, however later the problem re-occurs.

4K has a different set of problems. The unit will occassionally go dead when switching to playback mode, complete black and the only save is to reboot. This would have happened about 10 times throughout the day. Sometimes the unit will attempt to playback in a pseudo false colour look (wig out mode), once again only righted by a switch on off. And sometimes there will be just a black screen in playback with the touch screen functions visable, but no vision.

Bringing the footage home and replaying on the odyssey now, I have the same issues.

Onset I tried 2 different batteries and 2 separate power sources- no change. Ambient temperature was about 20C. All problems were random, but very frequent.
Footage all appears safe.

Are these known issues?

Thanks.

Jeezuz, Mitch, are you guys planning on ever get a stable version of the firmware out? Getting all the same glitches as above. Switching itself off randomly, funky weird looking colours when switching to playback. I'm shooting for Red Bull this week. They have expectations. Trying to show shots to the director is an embarrassment.

No doubt this is the first time you've heard of this issue, hey Mitch?

Did some testing too today. Same here. This FW Version seems even more buggish than the old one. Playback issues can be solved by ticking other shots in the playlist, but still - not a good thing if you have clients next to you.

I've been torture testing the 7Q today . I didn't seem to have it quite as bad as you did, 35mill.

For for the 4K and 2K playback, it's fairly glitchy. Lots of random weird colors that can pop, but I have noticed that

1) If you shot something in 4K, playback works better if you are still in 4K, the same applies to 2K. For example, if you shot something in 4K and try to playback a clip you shot 10 minutes before in 2K, it causes it to freak out.

2) I notice if you disconnect the BNC cable, then playback seems to not be quite as affected if you are in 2K or 4K, probably because there is no signal to the 7Q.

3) The unit did go black for a while and stayed black, but I notice if I hit things like the S&Q button it brings it back from black, so at least I don't have to power cycle.

Yeah, there's still a ton of glitches, but I will say the 7Q does feel a lot snappier than before., where switching modes or doing playback would cause the 7Q to hang for what seems like an eternity. Now, the screen just goes complete black for a bit (which I don't seem to remember happening before), but the it rebounds pretty quickly. Only a few times did it get stuck on black, then I usually just hit some random buttons which seems to bring it back.

I can live with all these little glitches as it doesn't seem to affect the final footage and I have a feeling the glitches will always be there. Instead of focusing on fixing these little things, I would prefer attention to 4K compressed and 4K2HD60.

I don't know if it's any buggier, if anything it's about the same in terms of bugs with playback. I will say that this version, the 7Q does seem to be a bit snappier and react quicker to button pushes which is a big improvement in itself. Seems like it doesn't get quite a hung up as it did before.

For me the glitches were present trying to play back the recently shot clip. No mixing of 2K or 4K. I didn't have any playback issues on the previous version. So for me this is an infinitely worse scenario.
Trying to be confident on set that a clip doesn't have an record issue, isn't something I want to be worried about mid shoot. Constantly reasurring the director that it's only playback, when Im not 100% sure. On every job. Playback needs to be stable. Especially with 4K/2K as it isn't eactly like you can pop the SSD into a computer to verify the files ok.
Ticking and unticking differents clips isn't a fix for me either. Especially when the units goes dead.
Thanks for the tips guys, hoping we can get this addressed as a fix asap.
I'd love to hear from CD.

Hey 35mill, maybe trying re-installing the firmware. I had a glitch once where the menu buttons would not stay on. I re-installed the firmware and it went away. Good luck and I know how frustrating that stuff is.

I shot a wedding yesterday. Just as the bride & groom were ready to cut their wedding cake, I turn on my FS700 & 7Q and the 7Q screen is all screwed up. It's as if it were divided into 4 blocks and the top half & bottom half were switched. The left half & right half were also switched. I was recording 4K2hd at the time with a rec709 profile. This made it miserable trying to frame the shot. I had no time to reboot the 7Q or I would have missed the shot. Fortunately, the recorded footage was not damaged, but this issue needs to be fixed.

Needless to say I am very disappointed after waiting 3 months for a firmware update and it seems as though we have taken a major step backwards.

Thank you,
