07Q Firmware v2.10.141

News from Dan:

Our next firmware release, which is expected to be numbered 2.11,xxx will add the following recording mode for the C500:

4K (4096 x 1080) at 120 fps, will be recorded in Raw, in any Odyssey7Q with our C500 Option.
http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/converg...ents-odyssey7-new-firmware-2.html#post1856098

2.11.xxx should not be three months away from 2.10.141.

I hope, it's the Release bringing also ProRes 422 1080p60 for Sony FS700 RAW or HD-SDI Input and it might already be in Beta Test now, heading for early August?

* 4096 x 1080??? Skiping each second line for HFR?

Mitch,

I can't access the LUT in REC709 800%, SLOG2 works fine, but in 709 800% it is grey out. Im set to 4K2HD 25P.
Playback options are amazing compared to what we were used to. A pleasure to use.
The FS700 LCD's monitor exposure match compared to the 7Q is much closer now, but still not the same in 709 800%. SLOG very close together. The standard REC709 (in 4k2HD mode) at first glance seems much less crunchy in contrast and saturation than the previous build. Work has been done here, yes?

thanks.
Yes, work has most definitely been done here.

I'm on a business trip without my FS700 to test, but I am noting all of these posts and making sure the engineers are also aware. We will look into it all.

Please understand that there is no feature or function all set, ready to go. If it was in fact done we would have included it in the release.

Furthermore, we do not know if the above mentioned features will or will not make it into the next firmware release. Engineers work on the projects and if it is done in time then it is included, but if it is not, it is not there.

More importantly, I have already stated pretty clearly what the single most important function is for our staff to accomplish. It transcends any single camera and applies to many systems moving forward. And no other features will take precedence.

That said, there is always the possibility of a patch release. But many do not seem to understand the point of a patch release. It is NOT to add new features. It is specifically to fix serious issues in the current firmware. If there are nt issues that are deemed serious enough to warrant a patch release, there will be none.

i suppose our point is, if it's so close to being available, just put 60fps 4K2HD out there ASAP. Of course we would all love 4K compressed, but CD's track record has been terrible so we might be waiting another 6 months till you get 4K right and we'll just be way more frustrated knowing that another major feature is essentially ready to go, but was put on the back shelf for something that is not certain.

+1

Thank you,

Installed the firmware and gave it a try today.

4K 100 fps is very nice. I am amazed! This will really make filming waterfalls and landscapes an extra edge. No need to rent Epics to make outdoor sports films now.

I hope 4K2HD60 is next on the list. I am stoked for that option! The image is so clear, and demand for 4K is so low, that it should not really be a discussion what comes first ;-)

Oh and finally you included a playback system that actually works. Thanks for that! It looks VERY nice, and i finally feel secure in looking back to my takes that the process is smooth and presentable to clients/crew.

What is the current state of the CD Luts (these never worked correctly) and Resolve workflow and where can these be found on the CD website?

The LUTs are not very useful. There is a good set of Resolve settings that Clermond and I use that get it very close to 4K2HD and looks really good without LUTs. Do a search for it as I cannot remember the settings and I'm not at my computer.

Do a search for "ACES". Really is a great way to go.

Well said, my feelings exactly.

If you look at everything Dan said in that post, and not just focusing on the "code is done" part, I think there's a larger picture to be seen. Dan said:
This part of the project is done, but we finished this part too late for inclusion in 2.10.141, which we released yesterday, as the thorough testing would have delayed this release.

I asked our team yesterday if we can get the testing done for our next release, and I am hopeful that we can.

To me, even though it seems the basic code might be close to complete, it doesn't mean that it's ready for implementing in a public firmware. Even Dan says he's "hopeful" that it makes it in the next release, which sounds like the testing phase will be quite rigorous and time consuming.

Here's how functions in firmware development generally goes:

You program the new function.
You discover the myriad of things that the function does not do properly.
You correct those things.
You discover all of the other functions that have now been screwed up by the implementation of this new function.
You fix those functions.
Those "fixes" cause other "failures" and you have to hunt them down.
And you continue the cycle repeatedly until the bug hunt is complete.

This is much of the reason this stuff takes so long.

Great explanation Mitch. I for one don't have the expertise to be a beta tester and problem solver, so I appreciate the relative stability prior to release. The fact that you guys continue to add functionality at no charge to existing users is impressive as hell. Thanks!

They deliver "new stuff" "without charge" because we already paid for it!

The O7Q was listed with all the features and many more when we purchased it. The FS700 option was listed with the features but when i paid for it, came only with a 2K raw option...

Yeah I think that's why so many people are angry. I think this model of releasing a product that's only half finished and slowly adding features isn't great. It certainly doesn't do CD any favours and causes a lot of bad feelings. CD seemed to originally seriously underestimate the time it would take to code this stuff.

Adding 1080p50/60 and 2160p/24/25/30/50/60 to ProRes 422 (HQ) would solve most of the anger.

And I understand, everything is under development. Top priority. Should be available this year.

2160p50/60 compressed recording might be uncertain, as development detected a potential underperformance of hardware. Yes, we paid for these features. Yes, they are late. But if they deliver, happiness might be back again.

Can somebody upload the S-Log2 and Rec709 LUTs for Resolve that was available for download recently on Convergent Design site? With new design they disappeared. Support is not answer more than 18 hours. I would be very grateful! Thanks in advance!

It helps to understand, I think, the hi-tech business environment, as well as the mind of the marketing department. With the rate new products are developed and released for market, these days a new product is under terrific pressure to be released before any of the competitors, i.e. first to market. And so, any strategy that puts the product on the store shelves, as fast as possible, meets the marketing criteria. The O7Q is a perfect example. How many of you would have bought the O7Q if it just hit the shelves today? Considering that Atomos is now making a competing product for considerably less. But, you all ran out and invested in the O7Q based on promises, because it was first to market with a whole new technology concept, i.e. a programmable monitor and recorder. In another years time, my prediction is that we'll see a few more manufacturers entering the market with these devices. The truly surprising idea is that a small, 3rd party manufacturer could come to market in partnership with a huge enterprise like Sony. Kudos to C-D for having developed their relationship with Sony, I suppose it began back with the Nanoflash using Sony's mpeg2 hardware chip. Unfortunately, selling a product before its time, is frought with all the dangers and red flags we all know well with the O7Q. Again, I really applaud C-D for the progressive thinking and approach. I think their initial advertising should have been a little more open and honest about what was smoke and mirrors and what was true potential product features. One of these days, that kind of misleading advertising is gonna bite them.

Mitch, you've mentioned this numerous times and we get it. If it's that difficult wouldn't it be easier to just release the 4K2HD 60fps since it's much further along than 4K compressed. I think many of us don't really care which comes first, 4K or 4K2HD60, we just want to see that CD can actually release something in a reasonable amount of time.

So instead charging ahead like Ahab hunting Moby Dick with 4K tunnel vision only to have it blow up in your face 4 months from now and be left with nothing; maybe just take the path of least resistance, listening to your customers and do what's easier for Convergent and make everyone happy (including your engineers).

Like I said, I don't have a huge bias towards one or the other, I just want to see a promised feature released quickly and easily.
