07Q Firmware v2.10.141

Screw those guys ^

I want raw timelapse next

raw, raw, raw!

Wouldn't a DSLR be much better for time-lapse? I use my Canon DSLRs for that because it's a much higher megapixel, great RAW and I can fit a DSLR on my motorize dolly time-lapse rig which I can't do with the FS700. Also, I use a Dynamic Perception control unit which is geared towards DSLRs and give you far more time-lapse options that the FS700 would ever have.

DSLRs just seem to make way more sense for time-lapse as it's what it was designed for.

+1

Don't get me wrong, I've been on shoots where someone was randomly like "hey, could we get a 10-minute time-lapse over here?" and it was nice that I could drop the FS700 into 1fps mode and do a time-lapse on short notice... but if you are looking to set up deliberate time-lapses, use a DSLR. In addition, since time-lapses can take a long time, you can keep shooting with the FS700 while the DSLR does a time-lapse!

How are people finding the LUT? I got a horrible magenta cast, in the Raw -> Raw mode, whereas as in the Raw -> Prores (4k2HD) mode I got a very nice looking LUT. Yes I am in slog2 and the cam is outputting raw.. Anybody else had similar issue?

THIS

I am finding the *new* LUT function horrible.

This is an ok lit scene (1 stop under), ISO 2000, Slog2 PP, 180 degree shutter...Recording this 4K raw...there is almost zero noise. If I turn on the LUT function, I get a horrible red cast, blown highlights and a LOT of noise.

Anyone else confirm this? After I installed the update, when the Odyssey rebooted, it immediately went to "loading FS700 LUT" or something to that effect. This took 2-3 minutes which I thought was a little long for a LUT.

Also, now if I press and hold on the LUT function, I get an empty box. Should I not see the other available LUTs or is the Odyssey only show me the LUTs for the installed RAW codecs?

Switching from 4K RAW to 4K2HD takes 3 minutes now? weird, it used to take 5 seconds...but yes, using the LUT when in 4K2HD is quite nice. Looks fabulous and has no noise.

Yeah, I've gone back and forth again now and it only took a few seconds. weird.

Switching between modes?

The first 3 minute boot is when you load a mode into one of the two quickslots in your O7Q. After you have loaded 2 profiles, in example 4K2HD and RAW modes, switching between them is fast.

Next time you use ARRI or Canon mode, it will be a new 3 minute wait and also, your current Sony option will be removed from quick memory and you will have to load it from slow memory again. Thats a new 3 minutes.

I think I might have found a bug...

Playback of clips recording in 120 4K RAW or 240 2K RAW, moving between those clips causes some monitoring issues. The files are completely unaffected, but you can't playback.

EG I've recorded some tests with 1204K raw...then some at 240 2K raw. In playback of the last recorded file, everything works fine. Scrubbing, etc. Nice. I can go to previous clip. No problem. If I go previous to a clip that is 120 4K raw, the monitor wigs out and does the heebee jeebee. If i enter record mode and come back it clears up...until I move (previous/next) to a different record rate.

I haven't tried this with different modes. This is all done with FS700 RAW record mode only.

EDIt: I see there is a known issue listed in the release notes, but mine isn't behaving like it states. Going to a different clip and back again doesn't restore the playback. I have to change to record mode and back.

I've alerted the engineers to look into this.

In 4K RAW, the only available LUT is the RAW (represented in S-Log2) to REC709.

In 4K2HD mode, switch between LUT options in the camera's Picture Profile menu. The Odyssey7Q recognizes this in metadata and adjusts accordingly.
Available options are S-Log2, ITU709 (aka REC709) and ITU709 (800%) (aka REC709 800%).
In S-Log2 and REC709 800%, the Odyssey7Q's LUT function will show the image adjusted to standard REC709.
With the Picture Profile set to REC709 there is no LUT.

The new LUT functionality is that there are now LUT options available when in video modes rather than just RAW modes. We accept several Log signals to LUT into Rec709 for monitoring purposes. Supported video signals for LUTting include: Alexa Log-C, Canon C100/300/500 (C-Log), F3 (S-Log), F5/F55 (S-Log2, S-Log3) and FS700 (S-Log2). In the video mode, go to the 4:2:2 Input tab in the Menu (this tab does not come up wen in RAW mode) to select the correct input signal type.

I agree that these different places for LUT control can be confusing and are not as intuitive as I would like to see. This will be addressed in the future with an overhaul of our menu system.

I can't scrub clips recorded in 2K RAW or 4K RAW but I can play a mix of these files, I only recorded a few seconds though so can't say it's an extensive test. Still some work there for CD though...

THIS

I am finding the *new* LUT function horrible.

I'm finding the new LUT in 4K2HD mode is quite messy looking for some reason... It seems a lot noisier and clips the highlights in an ugly manner that I don't think the previous LUT did... Maybe I'm wrong though, no way to test this...

Mitch,

I can't access the LUT in REC709 800%, SLOG2 works fine, but in 709 800% it is grey out. Im set to 4K2HD 25P.
Playback options are amazing compared to what we were used to. A pleasure to use.
The FS700 LCD's monitor exposure match compared to the 7Q is much closer now, but still not the same in 709 800%. SLOG very close together. The standard REC709 (in 4k2HD mode) at first glance seems much less crunchy in contrast and saturation than the previous build. Work has been done here, yes?

thanks.

I was joking, of course.... That said, a DSLR can often cause flicked. As I said on the April firmware thread, CD should look into how Blackmagic are doing it, as it is 100% flicker free.

Also... I'm not a filmmmaker, I create video loops for Android, I often composite timelapse and realtime or even slow motion to create my pieces... Having it all in one camera would be ideal.

Not some huge pressing issue though... Like I said, just joking about.

I also have a lack of LUT in REC709 800%. I also experienced lag in the 4K2HD playback- I scrub through the clip, it plays fine for a few seconds, then choppy for a few seconds, then back to smooth playback. I've only done one set of studio tests with the new firmware, but is anybody else getting this issue?

I will say I still don't like the LUT's for the RAW options. But truthfully the only way to work well with those is to make a LUT in post and load it into the camera. That way there are no questions.

BUT if you do 4K to Prores I'd say that the LUT's for SLOG2 and Rec709 800% are useful.

Thanks Mitch.

When choosing PP on the FS700, whenever I select REC709 or 800%, the Odyssey will flash a message that I need to switch to Slog2. Which is confusing as well.

Again, thanks for tang the time to respond to these questions Mitch!

If you shoot RAW you need to choose SLOG2. The reason I think is so the picture you see will match what is on your computer screen in editing. In "4KRAW--->Prores1080" mode you can choose SLOG2, REC709, or REC709 800%.
