Agreed. I much prefer the FX6 ergonomics. The C70 (and now C80) design of like a quasi DSLR body with video-centric elements wedged in—e.g., XLR inputs and room for a real battery—is a strange choice, to me. I've gotten a little more accustomed to it now that I've used it on a couple shoots...
Yeah it really impressed me. In some ways it offers even more versatility than my FX6, which (for me) is a nearly perfect camera. I'm currently trying to convince my unit to pick up one (or two).
Mini-XLR is my only other gripe on the C70, in addition to the lack of SDI. But with a couple...
I've been using a C70 on a couple shoots at work and it's been a fantastic camera to work with (apart from the floppy monitor hinge). The image looks great, the menus are pretty straightforward, 10 stops of internal ND is incredibly convenient, and there are a range of codec options. The form...
The only thing I'd really love in my FX6 is the ability to shoot 4K120p with audio. I'm certain this could be done via firmware (but just as certain it won't happen, sadly).
Although if Sony came out with a S35 version of the FX6 (like the "FX60" that people claimed was on the horizon after...
I have to admit I've got a soft spot for the F900 look. If you haven't already seen Miranda July's Me and You and Everyone We Know it's another example of the F900 being used to beautiful effect. And of course Michael Mann's Collateral or Miami Vice.
It's also fun to read some of the old...
Nice to see Sony keeping the camcorder idea alive!
I haven't seen the tests yet, but I wonder if the noisiness in slog3 is similar to what happened in the older Sony FS cameras—i.e., they required overexposing by 1-2 stops for a clean image. I had a Sony camcorder years ago and it was crazy...
Thanks for sharing this, Charles! I love the concept of random script draws. Not only is it more of a challenge but it prevents anyone from "repurposing" earlier material to fit within the year's 48 hour framework. Also very cool to see a young Jenna Fischer.
As one of the other interviewees...
This is such a great thing to share—thank you! I'd love to hear how post went (or is going), and to see the finished film at some point.
I've done the 48 Hour Film Project for the past few years and while it's different (all creative work has to happen in the 48-hour period) the scrappy vibe...
The Atomos Shinobi (5" model) is actually pretty decent. I can't comment on the color accuracy but for pulling focus and finding your frame it's more than adequate. Not as sharp as the SmallHD I've used in the past but good enough to get the job done at a much lower price. Decent battery life...
Nice write-up and review here: https://www.newsshooter.com/2024/07/23/kinefinity-eagle-sdi-e-viewfinder-review/
Seems like a great option. Tempting to sell my Gratical Eye for this...
There's a really good essay about whether the film is "true" to the historical record: https://lareviewofbooks.org/article/fact-fiction-and-the-father-of-the-bomb-on-christopher-nolans-oppenheimer/
I believe you will get a color shift [EDIT: really a gamma shift, I believe] unless you tell the NLE you are using to interpret the footage correctly. Premiere, Resolve, FCP will all recognize slog3 XAVC as full (data) levels, thus interpreting the footage correctly. They will not recognize the...
In my experience, anything more complex than a very basic edit is not going to move seamlessly from Premiere to Resolve (or the other way around). You will always be doing cleanup. It's a shame, but at this point I just accept that I need to work in the NLE in which the edit was created.
That...
Not to hijack but how are you getting around the C70's lack of an EVF? In particular if you shoot outdoors at all. We're considering picking up a couple at work (and the station already has one that's used by one shooter) but my unit is a bit worried about the monitoring situation. Zacuto makes...
I'm 6 episodes in and couldn't agree more. As you note, every frame is beautifully crafted without being overwrought. Some of the best cinematography I've seen period, and certainly a study in doing black & white visuals well. Seeing it really underscores the difference between just turning...
Selling my Canon XH G1, as I haven't used it in quite some time. Overall the camera is in very good shape for its age. I am not the first owner of the camera. The XH G1 first debuted back in 2006 (more here: https://global.canon/en/c-museum/product/dhc726.html). It's a great CCD camcorder with...
I've had no problem matching an Fs5 and FX6 when shooting slog3. Do a WB in post off a color chart or white card, use a LUT or CST to bring the footage into your delivery color space/gamma, and then grade to taste. As long as things are properly exposed (e.g., expose the Fs5 about +1 to 1.5...
