I understand where you're coming from, but for a small business like the one we're talking about in this thread I don't think it's a huge issue. If a very large company suddenly changed its name and started going by something else you'd probably ask why.
That being said, there's precedent...
If you start with one name and decide it's not working for you later on, or you grow out of it and want to move into being perceived as a bigger entity/business, then you can just file for a DBA "Doing Business As" and come up with something new.
Certainly worth considering from the get-go...
You make good points Paul. I would think that my current expenses will most likely not be the same as my expenses in retirement.
It's good to hear your experience regarding the percentage of income you're currently operating from. That type of context is pretty helpful!
Image quality is not easily discussed because the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts.
It may also be that it's not really economically viable for any potential manufacturers to put in the time and effort to produce an AI-powered camera that's an Alexa35 competitor.
Regarding...
Thanks for sharing this Paul. I love to hear stories of people who have planned well and are doing well.
I've still got a good chunk of time before my retirement. But keeping an eye on these yearly posts and what's working for others is extremely helpful.
I'd love to know how things stood...
Hey Charles! Nice to see you here!
I'm actually quite interested in your current use of the C700 FF. I have a C500 II myself and it was my understanding that the C500 II has the same sensor as the C700. The C700 was kind of under appreciated a bit once they released the smaller C500 II, so I...
I do think it's interesting to see different filmmakers describe each camera and why it was their choice.
For example:
"The ARRI Alexa Mini was chosen for its exceptional dynamic range, natural color reproduction, and compact form. Its small size made it ideal for handheld operation,"
I...
I definitely think if you have the FX6 and C70 you're set for years honestly. I could also say the same for most modern cameras.
I think the real upgrades nowadays with cameras are workflow-related, rather than improved image quality specs.
It's 100% this. ^
All my cameras look great when exposed properly and a scene is lit. Or they look great when shooting outside and just properly exposing for middle grey and/or the scene.
And even when the camera doesn't quite have as much dynamic range as the top end cameras, it's choosing...
As someone who very recently has been testing all of my cameras against each other in an extensive "lab" setting (consistent lighting, lenses, exposure, processing, etc.) I am inclined to agree.
I often wonder if I should sell all of my current cameras, just get two C300 II's, shoot the 1080 444 12 bit on those cameras, and call it a day. ;)
Obviously there are better choices nowadays in terms of features. But does it get a WHOLE lot better than that? ^
R5C perhaps? You'll need a handful of the newest LP-E6 batteries, but it still ticks a lot of boxes.
It's not soft in regular mode. You can slap an XLR box on it still and it has an EVF.
Not as modern as the newest options, but still a killer option, IMO.
For sure! It could certainly be useful just to get some more eyeballs on the limitations.
Despite being a Canon shooter for many years myself, I never actually shot on the C100 II. I'd love to see how the image holds up...or doesn't maybe in this case? 😅
If you wanted to export an uncorrected tiff of the log image out of davinci resolve and upload for others to take a look at, that could be helpful to really get an idea of what you're talking about?
There's something about old, previously VERY EXPENSIVE, cinema cameras that generate a lot of nostalgia.
I think usually it has to do with seeing what really talented DP's and film crews previously did with those camera systems. If they could do it, why can't I?
But I think the reality is that...
Yeah, I agree it's definitely more of a recent thing. It would have been unfathomable for me to explore owning a Mini a few years ago. Prices have come down so much in the last several years that buying my Mini used was more akin to owner/operators buying C300 Mark I's or II's, or Sony F55's or...
Thanks for checking it out! Unfortunately I don't have a C70 in my possession. But I do plan to do some testing alongside the R5C and C500 II. Happy New Year!
I feel like Arri made a bit of a push with the recent Alexa35 Extreme upgrade to try and get more into the natural history space. The addition of the higher frame rates in the A35 Extreme lends itself more to that type of work, work that traditionally seems to have been more heavily dominated by...
Lots to agree with you here, but also a few personal insights.
I've actually not found that I need a 1st AC, Hi-5, prep days, etc. for working with the Mini. It actually depends more on the style of shoot I'm on. If it's more commercial based and the budget and shooting schedule allows for it...
