Taken on an iphone, I've of course exposed for the screens so the reddish/magenta color cast is pronounced. In reality, its a very slight hint of magenta but I want it to be as white and close to the 6500K light as possible. Macbook Air 13" screen for reference, and a 6500K light in my room for...
Hi all,
I am looking for a relatively affordable (< $400) color correction monitor for web display, mobile devices etc just general color correction. I understand these things are super hard to come by for this price but its all I can afford at the moment. I can probably get my hands on an...
Hi, I am trying to shoot cinematic portraits for photography and in the market for a 2 or 3 light kit. The style im going for is chiaroscuro, Dan Winters, etc. Basically an isolated small pocket of light on the face or body, not light everywhere, but just a very controlled strip or pocket of...
How is that possible that a Fresnel is hard light yet has soft shadows? Never understood that but its very interesting to me. Any way to make a flash strobe look like a spotted fresnel?
Anyways im looking into flashlights on Amazon but dont know what to buy for my exposure. I shoot Portra 400...
Nah, I dont think so. They creator of the image already told me its a gelled flashlight, plus theres 3 spots so 3 gold reflectors would be very incovenient to pull off
Lets forget the multiple light sources, Im trying to figure out the face one only, I can figure out the rest easily. I am not 100% determined to buy Arri's so if I can get an identical look with my AlienBee I would stay with it and just buy another one to control fill.
Anyways, what is order...
Okay so if I use flashlights or flash strobes with grids to make a spotlight, how does one avoid hard shadows? Are you saying get the light source as close as possible so its larger in comparison to subject thus softening the shadows?
Ah thanks, you saved me some time. I will go for CTS then if you think that is the type of gel used here. Do you think they are doubling or tripling the gel to get such a transformative look? I really want a dramatic golden orange just like this
I am shooting in-studio portraits on Portra 400 medium format film and looking to invest in some continuous fresnels. My aperture is almost always f/2.8 since I like the shallow dof look, which also means I dont really need the overpowering of flash/strobe. I do like to gel my key light usually...
I think I may leave the flash ungelled since I want the fill of the scene to be pretty cold and the keylight to be super warm. I am more interested in knowing if flash can be used to lift shadows without overpowering the 650w key light..
Shooting portraits in studio, I want to have my Arri 650W be a key light for the models face. Assuming I want a cooler background and warm face, and I want to lift the shadows, could I use my AlienBee 400 to bounce off a wall for fill and my Arri for the face? I am also curious on what you guys...
Guys...the first post says I am shooting in a studio...there is no sun to worry about. It would be very hard to do this with strobe at night, the flash going off even at the lowest power even gelled would overpower the skin quickly. The background is blurry, a wide open aperture was used so...

Catchlight here
Planning to shoot this style in a studio, will have to go out of my way to buy 3 lights of course (key, fill, hair). Arris are so expensive, but I might have to bite the bullet. I do own an AlienBee if that might work. Yes, im shooting on film stills not...
