Thanks to all people who have seen our short film.

I am especially grateful for those people who have supported us so much.

ZACHARIAS

I'm sorry for being such a n00b and flogging a dead horse, but only members with 100 posts or more could have voted for the films, and spamming would have been obvious.

So what's wrong in posting your film in other boards? Did I miss something?

It is quite simply against the rules. Rules is rules my friend.

First I loved this movie.

Second I'm not commenting on whether any rule vioilations were intentional or not. It's just a fact that they happened, but giving MacGregor and Zacharias the benefit of the doubt, and assuming what happened was accidental, the following still applies:

Third the reasons below are enumerated not to flame the filmmakers of S I M I L O, but to answer your question and any simmilar ones as thoroughly as possible ... so here goes.

REASON ONE:
It's Barry and Jarred's Goal that films are judged as much as possible on merit rather than buzz.

this thread has 17,000 views and 600 posts

the 1st place film for last fest, made by filmmakers who had huge outside following only has to date, 4 months after that contest close 3,000 views and 100 posts.

the next highest viewed thread for a film in this contest has something like 3000 views and 145 posts.

While those directed from an outside site cannot vote they can influence or add to the buzz of a film, so when I viewer that can vote begins surfing around the festival they see S I M I L O and say "holy **** -- this film must be baddass, look, nearly 20,000 people have read this thread -- I gotta see this one, it must rock" Now preumably when watching the film they would have their own opinion upon seeing the film and vote accordingly, but buzz is contagious and does have an effect.

It's just very likely that a film like We Are Not Alone, which is as good or nearly as good as S I M I L O (even macgregor has said he thought it would/should/could/ or might win) can likely stand a chance against such effective marketing.

So Jarred and Barry want the films to be judged as much as possible on merit. Not entirely possible, but its a good fight to fight. Also, nobody else had this advantage -- be it small or great -- except for S I M I L O.

REASON TWO:
Err ... its in the rules ... its very clear ... it says DON'T DO IT.

and there was more than once instance of it in this case.

REASON THREE:
It's demoralizing to see a film that you worked on getting little attention or less attention than a film with 17,000 visits to its thread when you sweated over yours and have followed the rules.

REASON FOUR:
Because people have poured their hearts and souls into this festival and are invested in the reception of and final placement of their films, its just not fair to include a film in the voting that could not follow the rules, specifically rules that could give them some increased chance (small though it might be) of winning.

S I M I L O is a better movie than mine in many, many, many ways, and if there were not multiple instances of outside promoting, had it beaten me, I would have said "Of course. That film is kick ass -- I could learn a lot from those guys". If it had beaten me with all the outside promotion I would have said, " you know what ... those guys would've probably beaten me anyway, but I guess we'll never know what would have happened on an even playing field ... we'll just never know ... might have made a difference ESPECIALLY IN A CONTEST WHERE PLACES MOVED UP OR DOWN ON ONE ONEHUNDREDTH OF A POINT ... but oh well ... that was a lot of stress and investment just to get clobbereed by a team that didn't follow the rules like 57 other teams."

Now some may say that S I M I L O would have had 17,000 views and 600 posts on their thread anyway because it's such a good film. Despite the hurculean, disproportional, record breaking size of these numbers you could be right ... but we'll just never know will we ... we'll never know.

Well said Jack... thanks for taking the time to clear things up... hope that helps everyone understand the situation a bit better.

hope so

MacGregor or Zacharias -- if you have a problem with that post let me know and I will delete it -- this thread is your house and I respect your film a great deal.

But I encourage you to leave it up. The less mysterious this thing is the better IMHO.

Yeah... and, I want to personally thank MacGregor and Zacharias for sharing their incredible talent with all of us on dvxuser.com. I am sure your film has inspired many people, including myself. Thanks guys!

I need some one in the US and Canada who knows the shotfilm world and that could send our shortfilm to festivals over there. I can offer a 10% of the eventually incomes that could be generated, as well as lifelong friendship. ;D

MacGregor, are you talking about for the completed extended cut or for the current 6 min. cut?

Knowing the festival circuit is about as easy as googling the information, so I think you can save that 10% and send it out pretty easily yourself ... unless you're looking for someone to bankroll all the festivals costs/entry fees.

I just hope that this next fest doesnt become a SIMILO style copycat fest. I just cancelled my white room rental :P
I guess that depends on what our team comes up with, right Aram?

you do see the address under my avatar now.

Sort of joking about the team up but sort of not.

We should talk at any rate if you are interested.

I still have my white room rental on hold, BTW. (jk)

What are you all talking about? And what does white room rental mean?

Thanks Aram for the whithoutabox link. I´m trying to know how do they get paid or where is the trick.

BTW, is there anyone in this forum living in Hong Kong? We want to go there to shoot our next shortfilm and we will need some help. ;D

I was wondering if you could elaborate more on how you did the lighting effects in the film. I think those worked out beautifully. I checked out the SIMILO film from the www.mysimilo.com, waaay better quality than the WMV file, it looked even better. I was also wondering how you did the slow motion ( like camera settings and what you did in Post to slow it down ).

Great work!

Withoutabox.com makes money from the film festival hosts themselves, not the filmmakers. Its great. No trickery :)

Oh yeah, I forgot, you can also expand and promote your film on myspace.com. Its also free and a great place to meet other filmmakers. My site is www.myspace.com/mindcastle if you want to check it out.

I've met a lot of other film makers from there and also made a film with a local person I met through there. You can probly find some one from Hong Kong who is interested in helping you out, what kinda movie are you planning on filming? sounds interesting.

No problem Macgregor. Withoutabox just lists all of the fests out there and when you want to enter a fest you add it to your profile and pay the fest fee. Im sure the fest pays the site for managing the entry stuff. Its easy to see what you have entered and it tells you if you have been accepted and all. Its a great service.
Yeah Jdanstan hit it on the nose. Since your flick is probably going to be inspiration for a lot of people for some time Im was saying I hope people dont try to copy you too much and we have a bunch of movies that all look the same.
Hence the white room joke.

Jack Im going to PM you on that...

Macgregor -

Adding nothing new - I loved your film. I missed the fact that the guy on the road was a robot and that she was in bed with a robot. I showed the film to my spouse and he got it right away. Anyhow, after watching the film, I looked at my DVX100A and said "Wow, look at what this camera can accomplish in the right hands." You inspired me to get off my buns and start exploring the capabilities of this awesome camera. Being a Vegas editor as well - I enjoyed watching you share with others on the forum the capabilities of this great program.

Thank you for such a wonderful contribution.

Ok, for all your questions and more BTS footage and audio comentaries we were thinking in making a DVD with all those contents but i am not sure if all the efforts and time to make it would be in compensation if only 10 or 12 people are interested in a copy.

What do you think?
