Composers Ticker Tape Parade!

also a score is score again regardless of who wrote it and if I ever had a conversation with them

because it's stock music doesn't make it just sound design and not music -- and it doesn't make it music that has just been thrown together without thematic and/or practical story telling concerns.

Sound design is sound design, it while too serves a dramatic and story telling end and can thematically enhance, it occupies a diffrerent ruberik than score, which is story telling through tonality and musical theme. Sound design may aid in storytelling and is essential to creating the world but is concerned with how this thing blends with that and which gunshot sound is best. Since this was scifi and i wanted the guns to be a bit tweaked I chose civil war musked gunfire ... but to create mood, reveal emoytional subtext and affect pacing, I carefully auditioned and blended hundres of cues and made a wall to wall score of MUSIC, not explosions swishes and car engines which works with the story.

There's music in my movie -- no getting around that and its used very well to TELL THE STORY AND CREATE THE WORLD.

what more do you want, dude?

CPU and A Brief Case have the award now

I said you have a point beyond the letter of the rule so let's go with it.

I also don't know why you would send me three PM's apologizing and then bring this back up again after having already made your point and actually having the award changed

for next time say that you want the category to say "best ORIGINAL score"

Everyone knows what you think and what I think and are sick of hearing from us on this issue so I hope we are done. :)

Please don't bring this up again Chris R. It's been changed. That's that. It should be all good here now. :)

i know i know...i have beaten the dead horse to a bloody pulp.

sorry guys :(

Would any of the other composers (other than me, hurn, hemophiliac, matt) want to chime in with any info about their score? Why they made the choices they did? What they might do differently for next fest? How many minutes/seconds they could write a day? (john williams says that two minutes of music is his daily writing goal) Anyone have things they wish they could've changed? Things they would have altered if there was more time?

Screenshots are always interesting, as are written notation, photos of recording sessions :)

read any good books lately? :)

everyone should run and pick up ALL THE SHAH'S MEN. it's about the failed Iranian coup and really cuts to the core of much of what's going on today in the Middle East..

Well.... I'll speak for Matt on the time per day. He did about 6 min. of music in about 6 hours. From 11pm to 5am one night. I was there the whole time at his house with his laptop and keyboard.

evan and i came up with a theme before we started filming. we ended up using the same melody but with a different feel. originally it was kind of a ragtime thing. but after we finished filming we wanted something a little darker. so i took the same melody but in a minor key and with kind of a tango feel. the other three pieces of music are just variations on that same melody. here's a shot of Electric Lazyland studios:

Who is this Matt Derr you speak of? Let's get him on the thread!

I'll work on it. He's an aspiring filmmaker himself. He did his first short with the DVX for school last year.

Hey man! Nice col legno action in the first half! I really liked it, reminded me a lot of some Hitchcock scores (north by northwest maybe?). Good Stuff!

Thanks C.R.--

It's definitely a bit of a crutch we electronic-based composers face. What I'm referring to is the "wow I have this patch that sounds wicked cool so I'll write around that b/c I don't have a real orchestra at my disposal." And the legno and bartok pizzicato sounds in the Vienna set are so choicy, I end up writing based simply on how cool I think the sound is and how much I want to use it. Sometimes this composing methodology works. Sometimes ya' end up writing something you didn't want to and just get frustrated b/c you don't have the Vienna Philharmonic at your disposal and you're being forced to work within these arbitrary sonic confines.

I'll take the Hitchcock comment to suggest that I succeeded on this one at least. :) I was trying to go for a more classical-vibe rather than modern movie-music. So I was listening to Shostakovich, Rachmaninov, that sort of thing (although admitedly my score is a LOT more basic than anything they ever penned). The 20th-century Russians are just the best for getting in the right musical mind-set for scoring. You can definitely hear their influence in the last theme in my score (the theme that reprises during the credits).

But I do acoustic non-Russian-sounding music too:

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Not MAC types!

but you guys seem so "cool bohemian"

oh well

BTW, how live is that bedroom and what if anything to do you do about it if anything when recording?

Where we just moved from had vaulted ceilings and brick walls and a wood floor, the sound was so thin that I had to record some ADR in my friends car, lol -- good thing I have a laptop.
