Film Festivals.

Briceman, is it possible to see One Step Ahead on the net somewhere? I'd like to check it out.

Yeah, here's the link:

Keep in mind, this was my first attempt at a short. I did no real casting, and no real lighting either. I am just trying to preface it by saying it's pretty amateurish IMO. But that having been said, hope you enjoy it :)

Just submitted to 8 festivals. I hope I get into some of them, and that it is worth the time and money. Thanks for all the IMDB stuff, I submitted for that as well.

Yeah, I definitely see your film as a festival film. I have been to a few fests and they are a lot of fun! It's great to hang out with a bunch of fellow filmmakers and watch each other's work. It's almost as great as dvxuser.

You've come a ways since then. It had the problem I saw in some of the films in SciFest. The actors were too young to be believable in their rolls...something you corrected in A Price Too High. It might seem harsh but that's just a deal breaker for me.

Thanks Blaine, I'll take that as a compliment. One of the main issues I wanted to correct in A Price Too High was the casting. I am glad we made strides in that area! :)

Believable actors will set the tone for good/bad critique. I'm no expert but when the actors don't fit the rolls they're are playing I tend to be more critical on the piece.

imdb says in order to be in the database, the film must have been

"accepted and shown on film festivals that don't accept everything regardless of its quality (if you have doubt, see this page for details)

Some general categories of screenings that do not generally qualify:
Online-only "festivals": Generally speaking, these are not sufficiently selective, and are really just a special case of the existing rule that, just because a film is available on a web page doesn't mean it qualifies. They generally don't have the level of exposure of a real festival."

I've submitted to four so far. Here are the ones I submitted to.

Action on Film International Film Festival - Long Beach, CA

Santa Clarita Independent Film Festival - Santa Clarita, CA

SoCal Independent Film Festival - Hunington Beach, CA

Weekend Digital Film Festival - Concord, CA

We've got about three or four others we are looking at submitting to as well.

Hm... looks like I may have to wait until we get into a real fest. We'll see if my submission goes through.

With regards to IMDB requirements, the sale-thru 'final ten' DVD of the Sci-Fi contest may bolster your submission. As DVXuser is in theory, acting like a distributor of films.

Same goes for the previous Zombie-Fest. I figure 50 people can load up 'cause of that.

Not as much work as you think. I used www.withoutabox.com. Basically I input all the stuff on my short once, and then they do all the work getting it to fit the festivals listed. I'm sure not all festivals are listed on the site, but a lot of fests in the midwest can only be applied to online via withoutabox.com. The site is free and even offers a simple online press kit that you can send to the festivals you apply for.

So far applying to:

Chicago Underground Film Festival, Great Lakes Film Fest, Metro Shorts, Independent Film Forum, Tribeca Underground Film Festival, Big Apple Film festival and Screenplay Competition, Woodstock Film festival, and The Indie Gathering.

Just under $300 in submission fees, but it was all online via credit card via Withoutabox.com. And when I use credit it's more like fake money, not that pesky real money.:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Yeah, I used withoutabox.com too. Excellent streamlined service. And, they've got a really great message board there too, for answering questions you might have about festivals and stuff! I think I spent about $90 on entering into the four I did. Thanks for that list Prezorg. I will check those fests out as well!

Hmm, I may have to resubmit to IMDB, based on the above tips (i.e. distribution, DVD cut, etc.). I submitted ours a few weeks ago (knowing it would take at least TWO weeks), and it's still not showing ... and we had legitimate talent involved with ours, both behind & in front of the lens that already have IMDB credits.

I enjoyed this short :) although, like someone else mentioned the actors were too young to be believable, but good.

One thing I did notice was that when the detective went to run after the 'villain' he turned to his partner and said "stay with her" she was already sat down and on the phone, obviously 'staying with her'. ;) (on the nitpicking front)

Good storyline though and I did think the the 'cut' was pretty good too.

As the saying goes, you learn by your mistakes.
