Free Apple/Panasonic Seminar

I just got back from the road show. The D.P. talking about the HVX200 was Matt Siegel. From Apple, the Final Cut Studio product manager, Paul Saccone, presented.

The room had between 100 and 150 people in attendence. Matt noticed that his presentation was geared towards a smaller, more interactive group. Paul demoed Final Cut with the HVX. The obvious question about having Apple support the MXF metadata was asked a couple of times. Paul confirmed that it does not read the metadata and would not discuss future releases.

So, if you read the HVX200 thread on this forum, you are unlikely to have gotten any news by attending. However, there were a lot of people who didn't have the benefit of this forum and they certainly needed the information.

The one good nugget I got was that Apple is publishing a white paper around Friday (March 3rd, 2006) on their website that discusses how to take advantage of the HXV200 with their software.

Coincidentally, that is the day my HXV200 should arrive.

I've been to a couple of these things now, and noticed that only rarely do I actually learn any new info. If what you say is true, I may well end up skipping this one.

tried to register for the austin seminar but no dice.... I'll be at sxsw anyways, maybe I can eek my way in somehow

The event you went to with Gary Adcock was not part of this series. The Whitepaper should be up on the website for download soon, I think.

Best,

Jan

Is the one set for Seattle on March 6th the one sponsored by Panasonic Jan?

It's our first attempt to actually see the cam, and we hope that it is the one's to which you are referring.

Panasonic is at all of these Apple events. I believe you will have Mike Caporale at the March 6 event with Apple on the FCP. Mike always gets rave reivews.

Jan,

My HVX 200 will be delivered this week....I am scheduled to attend the seminar in Austin. My main reason to attend this seminar is to find out how to download P2 cards on to my 15" Power Book-G4 into FCP HD. Will this be covered in detail at the seminar?

Thanks

The P2 cards only work in version 5, and the high-def files only are recognized in version 5.0.4.

As far as details, here you go:
1) install the driver (from your HVX disc, or download from panasonic.com)
2) insert P2 card into slot
3) file->import->Panasonic P2

You're done. :)

Forgot the Firestore

Forgot the Firestore

Oh, duh. Matt said he had received a Firestore for the HVX and was getting ready to test it out. I didn't get a chance to ask about possible issues with files getting segmented into 2GB and the possible loss of timecode.

I guess that counts as news.

After a hairy, scary ride through the sierras, (Hairy road conditions, scary riding with me on ice in a hurry.) and getting lost in SF I got there just in time. The travel directions I got off the Internet must have gotten garbled because I found myself on 101 and lost in SF by following them. I wandered around only to find myself behind a UCSF bus which led me to the campus, and I finally found the road show at the conference center. C-monkey was right, not much new info, though Paul Saccone said no, there was no plans to up grade quick time pro to handle the feed from the camera to a laptop. He did say that we are authorized to have the same copy of FCP studio on one laptop and one G5, and pretty much said that they weren’t too concerned if you put it on two laptops to film with, instead of one laptop and one G5. Though of course they would rather we bought FCP studio for each machine. (I guess Steve Jobs still has designs on catching Bill Gates for who has the most money.) I mean if they would just put it on QT pro and charge 100 bucks a pop I'd be fine with that and it would still funnel the users to apple and FCP studio for editing. Oh well. :(

As for info, the white paper will be on the apple site soon, but he could give me no firm address outside of text.spec on the apple site, what ever that means. There is way more info here than at one of those shows, so unless it is easy for you to attend I wouldn't bother really going out of your way to check one out. The bottled water was nice, and boy the brochure on the HVX is nice too, but not worth the hairy scary ride down to SF and back to Reno.

I talked a bit with Matt and he really likes the camera in the 720p-np modes much better than the 1080i, but said that was his personal preference. He likes the softer look and color detail in 720.

So Barry, how is the HVX200 book/DVD coming along?

David
