noirfest.... my concern is that we'll get twenty movies that start out "it was dark and stormy the night (so-and-so) was killed".

one, I can handle. two, I can stand. twenty (this is the sound of me dying).

besides, do we really want to make a bunch of commercials for marlboro?

I guess one can tell my dislike for classic noir (ok, third man and touch of evil were solid). Modern noir is gritty and good, but there are only so many variations you can do. We should just abandon the 'noir' title and just call it what it is: murder mystery.

WCS - Mystery-Fest would be kinda cool... and to pull a good mystery off is TOUGH. If I could have put more than 10 choices in the poll, mystery would have been one of them!

My concern with Mystery is the time limit - a good mystery is tough enough to spin, but a SHORT mystery is nearly impossible - there just isn't enough time to set up possible suspects (or outcomes), etc...red herrings and the like.

From the short film mysteries I've seen in the past, the vast majority fall into two catergories: Obvious or Confusing.

It's either clear from the first frame how this thing is going to end, or the ending leaves everyone going "ummm, I didn't understand that at all"

I'm not saying it's impossible...I'm just saying that with a 6 minute time limit, why stack the odds against the majority of the entries?

Just my 2 cents.

My vote is still for a fest centered around a theme or subject matter - sort of like the Atom Films contest recently that asked for filmmakers to make a short film about what they woudl do with a magic wand....
Pick a situation - or a subject matter -and let the filmmakers choose the style (and genre) of their choice.
That way we still have something that ties these films all together, but we get a variety of styles and genres.

Luis,

Zombie-Fest was like that... all about the theme

I figure that's the way it will end up going... less about genre, more about theme. I did this genre poll just as a generic starting point.

What theme would you like? Any ideas?

BTW... I wasn't around back for Zombie-Fest... from when it ended to when the next one was announced, about how long?
