kickboxing clip

Some of the lighting in this was really good looking and other times it was a little too dark on his face (especially the closeup.) I like the blueish hue on some of those clips though, that looked good. What shutter speed did you use?

I thought it looked pretty good. I did a similar project a long time ago. I think cutting too much on a beat takes away from the impact. Try offsetting the images and the music a little and see how it plays.

I really like the black and white frame grab right to the action. That was really cool. Might have to borrow that :D

This is also a stylistic critique but I thought the lights in the shots were distracting. I liked the way he was lit thought. The harsh bright light matched the intensity of the subject's action.

1/250 shutter speed.... I just threw on the trusty ole home depot space heaters in the BG and told him to go at it, but yeah its a bit dark in parts. I also crushed the blacks a bit in post and kicked up the highlights to contrast it out a bit

adepew07, actually that is just a couple drum loops just thrown into the timeline, its purely coincidence that the match and cut on beat....add that with the rythmic pounding of the bag and yeah it does seem like its edited to the beat

this week were doing another training segment, this tme shot in the gym with a few other guys.... some grappling and wrestling as well as the boxing/kickboxing

Can't wait to see it. I boxed for a little while. Toughest training I've ever done. I loved it but I didn't have the time and money to keep it up. I wish there was a good gym near my house!

the music with the drums drowns out the bag work and the punches and the chain rattle from his living room ceiling are drowned out. the light in the back of him doesn't do it. way too close to his face can't see his technic which he hooks a lot. doesn't throw enough straight shots he will get caught with jabs and front kicks. he doesn't move enough around the bag; he will be tired by the later rounds. man am i opinonated!

kimko, I wasnt trying to win the academy for lighting here.... I just kicked on a worklight and shot from the hip.... and there are jabs and footwork/head movement but for this sequence I mainly wanted power shots and front kicks in an mma/nhb fight usually are a pretty worthless technique 90% of the time (very easily snatched up for a takedown)

sorry i'm a dick when the science of fighting is presented to me. but i have to disagree on the front kicks being snatched up. maybe high kicks but not low to the knee and hips. watch RICKSON GRACIE FRONT kick to knee to bridge the gap. it depends on the person applying the move. a person like your brother if he applies straight shots to bridge the gap and then get inside, that's when to hook. because if i were to fight him he looks to me as an inside fighter, i would try to stick and move because if he gets in, i'm now in his game and he would most likely take me to the ground, me being 6'2 then he would just ground and pound. as for the lighting, overhead with the shadows would've looked gritty and kool

Nice little clip... worked well with the music in my opinion... I understand this is not a how-to video, so i'm not being overly critical. good job, hoof.

yes and rickson gracie has never faced an opponent of high caliber, plus he hasnt fought in a few years, plus when he did fight he "chose" his opponents (based from a pool of japanese tomato cans)

the gracies invented BJJ, of course their legacy is tremendous... however, most of their legend fighters (royce/rickson) stopped competing when people started cross training and learning brazilian jiujitsu..... the gracies are no longer dominant in NHB/MMA competition like they once were.

regardless of the gracies..... the "front kick" or "side kick" or any other traditional technique that stems from arts like taekowndoe, karate, or kung fu have proved to be worthless in the "reality combat" competitons (pride, ufc, vale tudo, etc).... just like katas and board breaking.... these flashy techniques that were popularized by hollywood (think ANY cheesy martial arts movie in the past 20-30 years) have been de-mystified by the invention of ro rules/limited rules combat and have also been proven to have no real world (ie, self defense) application.... thats why you never see traditional martial artists (taekwondoe black belts, kung fu masters, etc) that are successful at real world combat..... ironically history has shown that the "unflashy" or "gritty" styles of boxing and wrestling (grappling) have proven to be the simplest and most effective styles for real world application

now dont get me wrong, I've been kickboxing for several years and have the utmost respect for all martial arts (even tai chi!!) and I'm not saying that any kick is useless, round kicks (round houses) , rooster kicks (a muay thai styles lunging front kick) , all have real combat application

phew.... maybe we should bring this discussion elsewhere kimko :-)

so when you say front and side kicks have no real world self defense application. is that your expierence or hear say. because i have been in martial arts for 34 years and a bouncer, sercurity, and bodyguard 15 years and let me tell you i have dropped a few men with sidekicks and front kicks and mostly ending fights with a jab. of course thats my expeirence. now when you talk about prize fighting, some one who fights no holds or whatever they are fighting people who practice day in and day out there is a difference of course. and this fighting is a sport to me is not the full intention of MARTIAL ART ie; meditation, forms(movement meditation taiqi) health fitness, herbs, anma massage pressure points, teaching health training not just fighting. breaking wasn't about how bad you are but a test in mental and physical power brought together by training all facets of the ARTS. it's just that the people who could not bear the training of the mind body spirit aspect of it just wanted to learn to fight, they are the ones who watered down the arts to pitbull mentality. now i've seen fighters years later, they ethier go into more spiritual route or they disappear with their so called art, any way you do 20 years my friend and then we'll talk, the ARTS may change but people never do. tell your brother establish straight shots or better yet come out here i would love to train him to prove my point. i have a few fighters 160 to 200 and really good people to work with. i also spar with my fighters but they take it easy on me. you see when you get older they respect you for what you have done and for what you teach them. anyways i'm rambling. good luck on the fight!:nads: i thought this was appropriate

no.... I didnt say you couldnt drop some unsuspecting non trained/drunk asshole in a streetfight or at a bar with a sidekick or front kick or jab.... you most definitely could. more of what I was trying to say is that MOST of the stuff you would learn at a "mcdojo" (the term I used to describe 99% of all traditional martial arts schools in the US) is pretty much worthless or I should say "inferior" to what you would learn at a more progressive school that teaches reality based combat.

thats why you wont see police, swat, military, etc learning katas/kung fu/taekwondoe or anything like that..... check this site out www.tonyblauer.net ... since you are a bouncer/in the personal security business you might find it really interesting

I've 35 years old and have been training in martial arts for over 17 years... I mainly focused on self defense oriented styles, the flashier, tournament oriented styles I have never really embraced... That being said, a front or a side kick from me will definitely put you out of the game. I've never been a high kicker; stomach and below is the sweet spot for me, but to say that those kicks are not practical in reality situations I think is crazy... A front kick to the knee (ouch) a sidekick to the legs as I'm leaning away from a punch to my face; game over, man.

my main point about the front/side kick is that it is not a very used/practical technique in an NHB/MMA fight.... unless its a push/rooster muay thai styled kick (which is a POWERFUL and badass technique) but kind of a ***** to land

I'll say this though... there are some fighters who make good use of wild and flashy kicks, David Loiseau comes to mind but fighters like him and are few and far between. That guy has been doing (I believe) kyokushin(sp?) karate and kickboxing since he was like 5yrs old

on the street, A LOT of stuff works ... tony blauers spear system IMO is the best system for real world application as far as self defense. Cool thing about tony is that he focuses in on the physcology just as much as the physical techniques. His system is a true marriage of science and art.

ha ha ha i can't help but laugh! i'm sorry but you put your thread up for your vid and you get this, i can see you now going WTF give me a break fellows! anyways i'm sorry i put this on you. no i don't do sercurity now i'm in the healing health field of massage. but i do separate the sport aspect to MARTIAL ARTS and yes i am "a traditionalist" as in taiqi, meditation the old ways i enjoy very much. my fighting days are over. even though i teach the SPORT of fighting, i do not mix the two up. if someone comes to me and wants to learn how to fight but is not going in the arena to fight another pro then i will not teach them. if they call themselves martial artist because they punch and kick the bag. i will quickly point out that they are not. for they have not earned the right to. to me a MARTIAL ARTIST has gone thru test of not just physical feats but mental and spiritual ones too. sorry about the preachey stuff. but as you can see i'm very outspoken when it comes to my ART. I AM A MARTIAL ARTIST and i was a professional kickboxer and boxer i was rated 8th in the world as matter of fact i had fought in N'ORLEANS a few times i fought under the W.K.A., P.K.A.,I.S.K.A. in the 80s:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I am not a traditional martial artist.... I prefer progressive/realistic training. I dont not strive to be a martial artist, I strive to be a good fighter and able to protect myself or my family on the street (god forbid). Either way, your comments about my little training sequence or your comments about the styles that I train in do not bother me in the slightest. Keep doing your thing, I will keep doing mine.

I did get slightly perturbed when you started speaking about what you obviously do not know anything about (NHB fighting and what works in an NHB fight) but its cool. I realize that reality styled training is not what your into.

wow dude you are hostile, i thought we were comunicating here. i guess not but hey like i said if you want to come out some time i'll show you what's real in life. the number one person who will hurt you and your family is YOU, so eat right, exercise, try meditating, don't drive fast, and most of all don't base your opinons until you have lived it. oh by the way

I'm not hostile at all.... I wish you nothing but good vibes and happines in your future endeavors. Thank you for your honest crit of my footage.

if you would like to further discuss martial arts, training, etc you can email me at jacob@mostisms.com ... I dont think dvxuser is a place we should rant on and on about our training philosophies
