The best PC Laptop for HVX

The Sager laptops represent the best value and performance in laptops.
I have a sager, and it works great for all video formats, however, For editing, I feel like it could be faster, and I want to stream to the hard drive. The sager allows you to have 2 hard drives 80 gig, plus 100 gig on the laptop, a 17 inch screen -1920x1200, pcmcia and 2 firewire ports, plus dual core processors, all under $3,159.

Here is my solution for my upgrade from my current sager 3.06 ghz laptop, although it works fine, just not as fast at rendering.

Still staying with the PC?

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Any further updates on Raylight? I was counting on that!!!

The Axio LE doesn't do 1080p or 720p according to the reseller I called this morning! What to do? What to do? I don't want to go Mac!

I am sticking with the PC. I like the idea that I can build it the way I want.
I want removable drives....the G5 case does not allow removable drives, I just bought (6) 120 gig removable drives to be used for different projects.

I like the idea that I can upgrade the video card with many options.

I just bought 2 gigs of DDR2 ram. Next month, I will be able to select a motherboard that supports either dual core pentiums or dual core amd chips via am2 socket to use these ddr2 ram chips.

I like to be able to chose my parts, and upgrade them with readily available parts.

I just re-looked at premiere pro 2.0 tutorial, and the multicam, realtime viewing without render, and color correction upgrades, make it everything I wanted it to be.

I just purchased ray-light, and I think that is the ticket for the short term. I have not tried it yet though.

With discount sources for PC parts, I can build the fastest desktop available for less than $2,000 That is including software (academic version of premiere pro 2.0), and samsung 21.5" monitor. A mac similiar system would be more than double, and more closer to $5,000, and no expansion bays beyond the dvd-r drive.

That's what I want to hear!!! I've been using this version of Premiere for almost a year. It has so many great features.

Green Hornet, you're giving me hope!

BTW: Isn't your avatar actually, Kato?

Sounds good, Green Hornet.

Here is my laptop that cuts HVX footage like a hot knife through butter:

HP nx9600
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
1 MB L2 cache, 800-MHz front side bus
2048 MB (400 MHz)DDR SDRAM (2 DIMM)
ATI Mobility Radeon X600
17-inch color TFT WSXGA+ WVA BriteView Panel
80 GB (5400 rpm)
DVD+/-RW

And here's where you can get them (great prices now, too):

A buddy and Mac guru tells me that Steve Jobs dumped the Motorola chip because they couldn't get G5/dual core into a laptop.

I wonder if PC laptops will be having dual cores like the new Intel Mac laptops?

NAB can't come soon enough for me!

PC laptops are already out that use the same Intel Core Duo processor.

Awwww Man! I've got to stop reading these PC threads! It's giving me an ulcer!!!

Barry: You said you used the Avid codec. Have you ever actually tried using the new version of Avid XPress for HD?

Has anyone out there?

I just can't believe my PC is already an antique (denial denial denial).

As I understand it, the biggest reason Jobs went with Intel had a lot to due to with the heat the power processors generated.

The Lenovo Thinkpads (Old IBM notebooks) have 1.66 to 2.18 MHZ dual core, 100 mg 7200 rpm hard disks laptops out there. www.thinkpad.com

That may be true, but my Dell workstation generates increadible heat. the room my computer is in is the hottest in the house.

I'd love to. If it'd work.

My Avid just quit working a couple of weeks ago, and just won't work anymore. Uninstalled, re-installed, it doesn't care. It refuses to make the media tool work.

Is there no hope? :crybaby:

Don't know. I wish it worked, but unfortunately I was using Windows XP Media Center, so I don't qualify for any tech support from Avid. So... right now I have little to no hope.

I downloaded the Canopus trial version today and spent the day tinkering with it. Unfortunately the trial version doesn't support MXF files so I been using some old DV footage I have. With some getting used to it might be workable.

Barry, are you planning on forking out the cash for Broadcast or do you have a way to get a demo that will support DVCPRO? I'm anxious to hear what you think of the Canopus solution in comparison to Final Cut.

Broadcast all the way. Not much point in getting just Edius, the Broadcast package is the one that has all the HVX-requisite stuff.

And do tell us what you think in comparison to FCP.

I went back today and looked at some Avid marketing materiel I had picked up at a demo. It looks like Avid Xpress Pro HD should be perfect for the HVX. I know they've now added 720 24p support, why isn't anyone talking about it?

Barry, unfortunately the Broadcast edition is not available as trial and I don't think it well ever be, because it doesn't change anything other in the behaviour of Edius than the admittedly great support for .mxf and the HVX, that is a problem 'cause one cannot really test its performace on his\her system with the HVX before buying.

I spent an entire day editing HDV files with Edius 3.61. my take: It's very fast even with HDV, it's well written, very responsive and looks professional. Other than that it seriously lacks features and the ones it doesn't lack, are implemented wrong and aren't appropriately accesible. I don't think I can work with this software for other stuff than doing REALLY ROUGH edits and the sort....

I just bought a MAC to use along with my PC 'cause the way I see it: Edius is fast, but can't work with it. Premiere (Was my best bet:crybaby:) doesn't support mxf and when it will support it, it will either need a special card or 56 processors. Raylight is slow and finally, I personally disliked AVID and the way it works, but even if I did like it I only managed to have 1FPS of 1 stream of 720p mxf on my system so no go....

I wasn't talking about it because I've been furious about it, since it just quit working and Avid support wouldn't do anything to help. And their website had nothing to say on it either.

Google eventually gave me the answer I needed, and now it's running again. Which is good. But Edius is already on the way.

So, sooner or later I'll be able to give a mini-review on all the editing options for the HVX because I'll have Vegas/Raylight, FCP, Avid and Edius Broadcast.

Man, that sounds absurd now that I say it out loud! :)
